I’d look at it as right or left handed retrieve. It’s always been my preference to retrieve using my left hand while my right dominant hand handles the rod, regardless of the type of rod and reel. I assumed I’d hold and cast with my strong hand and arm and rather that switch hands to retrieve, I’d leave it where it started and let the gears in the reel give the strength to reel in the cast or hopefully the fish.

Mind boggling. When I am using a spin cast the handle is on the left because I cast with the right. When using a bait-caster I do the same, but when using trolling rods, the handle is on the right. Never really thought about it before.

Yeah Jack, most saltwater reels are made with handles on the right side. I never thought about handles being on the left until I looked for my first baitcaster. I've always used my fresh and saltwater spinning reels,with the handle on the left side, and cast with my right. I just figured, with a saltwater boat rod or trolling rod, you don't cast, just let out line. Then you're cranking the reel with your dominant (stronger)arm.

Right...I mean correct, Fred. Now that I think about it, I think I do use my dominant (right) hand to reel with unless it's on a spin-cast. Even on a fly-rod I use my right hand to reel...or do I? I'm going to need to go look at my fly-rod now.

Have never seen a SPINCAST reel with the handle on the LEFT side... what brand would that be ?
Any SPINNING reel (except those really old...50yrs+) has the ability to switch the handle to either side.

You are right...I mean left...I mean both. You are correct, they can be switched to either side.

Not sure if this applies to all brands
of reels, but most newer spin-cast
(as well as most spinning reels) are now reversible ! Although not a fan
of spin-cast reels, I might consider
some of the new(er) UL (Micro)
spin-cast rigs, especially the reels
with the underhanded 'trigger' for stream trout-fishing or crappie/ sunfish/perch !

It's a good thing they ARE reversible,
as switching hands constantly gets
to be a pain ! With ALL my rigs I cast right-handed and retrieve with my left !

Since I hadn't shopped for a spincast for literally decades, I did not know that they are now ambidextrous, handle-wise. Just Googled them and right you are !
