Why does the line keep falling off my reel

Alright, so I will start off by saying that I’m fairly new to fishing and am still learning the ropes (but I enjoy it and hope to become much more informed).

I went to cabelas today to get new line. The guy told me he would put new line on my pole for free. Obviously, I obliged.

I get home, excited to go out and fish, and begin to rig my line. But, as soon as I try to string the line through the eyes of the rod, the line immediately began to just unravel and fall off.

Frustrated, I went back to cabelas, who told me I should get premium line. I did, and had them put it on for me again.

Get home, excited, same exact thing happens.

What do I do? Is there something stupid I could be doing or is it the reel?

Thanks in advance for your help.

TLDR: why does the line on my reel keep unraveling when I try to string it through the eyes?

It should not do that, and if they spooled it for you at Cabela's, it should have been done correctly.

Sometimes line will jump off of a spool if there is too much line. It should be about 1/8" from the edge of your spool.

Fluorocarbon is stiffer than mono, so it has a bit more of a tendency to do that than monofilament, but if you have a good quality line, even fluorocarbon should not do that.

If it is closer to the edge of the spool than 1/8", you might want to take a little bit of the line off (a little at a time, don't just take a bunch off).

Did the installer take it off the spool properly. There is a top and bottom or a left and right sides depending on how you look at it. To understand better, google it.

Also did he keep tension on the line while doing it? One last tip is to use a damp rag to maintain pressure and every 50yds or so relocate the position of the rag.

Quick question. Di you have the drag on the reel snugged up. If not it's free spooling n line will come off. Make sure bail is closed 👍👍

One more thing. While pulling thru eyes don't let slack line fall back toward reel

Can you take a picture of the reel with the new line on it in the closed position. Is it a spinning reel? Is drag set?

There’s only a couple of reasons that line falls off spool by itself , put on backwards, too heavy a diameter for spool size , or over filled , twisting can also be a reason but since you never used it ,that’s out!
If it’s put on by store machine it should not happen unless overfilled !

the same thing happen to me, i seen where after you put new line on it has a memory, so i was told to take the spool off the reel, and soak it in a little more then warm water for a few minutes, and now it works great.

Two suggestions: (1) Keep your bail closed with light drag as you put the line through
the eyes; (2) Straighten your mono or fluorocarbon line each time you you go boat fishing
by going at moderate speed and letting out your line behind the boat -- with nothing
tied on the end of the line, of course. The line will be straight when you reel it back in. You
might want to occasionally do this during a long day of fishing if the line starts to misbehave.

Close the bail loosen the drag a bit and just pull off line under some pressure to put it through the eyes. Problem solved. Now if you have trouble when you cast such as wind knots that is another thing. Some times you can put on a fairly heavy sinker and drift away from the sinker then when your line is mostly out reel in, it should take away some of the memory of the line. When you buy mono look for the limpest low memory line you can find. hope some of this helps.

I learned this a long time ago from my Uncle Buck that when taking line off a spool the line has to come off opposite direction when transferring the line to your reel, so clockwise off the spool transfer to the reel counterclockwise. Also, tension and follow the guidelines on your reel as to how many yards of line / lb test it can hold. Typically the manufacturer will suggest, go lower then their suggestion.
