Hard to go wrong with shrimp for bait. Pyramid weights cast well and keep you in positions well. Have to adjust size to match current.

That’s the beauty of surf fishing. You never know what you are going to catch. Last week in Venice, FL, I watched a guy surf fishing. He had his rod in a pvc rod holder stuck in the sand. He got talking with a buddy and took his eyes off his rod. I watched the rod holder fall over and the rod take off into the ocean. I ran over to try to find the rod in the water with no luck. The fisherman didn’t go after it because he had his wallet in his shorts. Just a little lesson on surf fishing. PAY ATTENTION!

Spring in coastal NC - look for whiting, drum, flounder, croaker on the shrimp bait.

Rod: 10'-12' / med.heavy graphite.
Spinning reel 4000-5000 size.
Riggs: High/Low or Fishfinder Rig.
Pyramid sinkers good choice. If you need more grip, use a sputnik or other break away weights. You do reel these back in.
Line: 20lb. Braid
Braid does not twist or retain memory causing twist. Braid is the best but requires strong knots. Also use a rod belt to let the rod do all the work.
If you're going for stripe bass a non-off set circle hook is required. Most all started going to this a law.
Shrimp is eaten by most every fish. I prefer "shrimp bits" by Hey Skipper. They are salted cured. That means they keep for all season, you will use less as they are tuffer than fresh.. they rehydrate when wet.
Fresh bait is always best, if you buy bait shop it better be wiggling.
