Just bought a Shakespeare Edition Tiger rod at Wally World last weekend to take on my first fishing trip ever
Everything was going well except when I reel in the line, the line will begin to reel well below the spool and onto the plastic, tangling everything up and creating a mess
What am I doing wrong?

Did the line come already on the reel? If so buy new line. Those combos always have cheap line. I always put new line on any combo I pick up. Even ones I buy when I forget my rod at home

The line has been sitting on the spool for god knows how long and has developed memory. You can delete the memory by boiling some water, killing the heat, and soaking the spool in it until it's cool enough for you to pull it out, or you can just change the line.

Get new line. Monofilament fishing line develops a memory if left spooled-on for too long.

Mikere,
I’d go with new line & tighten the drag a tad.
Remove the old line a wrap some black tape around the spool first before putting your new line on to stop any line from spinning on the spool.
Spool it up with new line, and always use spray on line conditioner before putting it away and before using the reel again
