I’m an avid freshwater kayak fisherman but new to baitcasters. I just ordered an Abu Garcia revo x reel and a st croix triumph 6’ med/fast casting rod . They were both $100 each. I ordered from amazon so just making sure I made the right choice. Also I ordered stren mono 12lb test for the baitcaster. From what I read 12 lb is a good start.

Love my revo x, I’ve got the inshore. I throw 15lb fluoro but I think I’m going to drop it down to 12 or 10.

Good to hear. From what I read it had good reviews. It was either the revo or blackmax which was half the price.

I also have the black max, it’s a good reel but it doesn’t hold a candle to the X in my eyes.

I hate fluoro as a main line, but I have a spinning reel, don’t know if it’s different on a caster.

I’m fairly new to fishing, at least at this level, What do you not like about it?

I’ve had lots of success with the higher end Abu gear. And I recently got a Revo X, also. But I replaced the spool bearings with HD ceramic bearings. Now, just a few months wait until open water when I can actually float my kayak. I really hope you enjoy the baitcaster! Good luck!!

Thanks! I know, here in NJ the weather sucks and I can’t wait til I can get back out on the water. Figured I can always practice casting in the yard for now since I’m new to baitcasting.

If this is your first experience with a bait caster, be sure you learn how to adjust the clutch and break to avoid birds nests or you will be spending all you time untangling your reel. Every time you put on a new lure you have to re-adjust the clutch. I also do not like flouro as a main line and would rather use mono or even braid. I know the pros are all using flouro as a main line but a starting angler might have trouble with it.

I found out a long time ago when you cast make sure the reel is turned to over on it's side. Casting right-handed turn the reel over on it's right side. Left handed cast turn it over to it's side. This reference is to turn it over on your thumb side. Helps with cutting down on backlashes after you adjust the braking system for the lure weight.
