Hopefully it rusts up before it kills em. If it's gut hooked n will probably die .

If the organs of the fish are not torn and it has enough body fat to live on until it heals it could live for a long time. I have caught fish with old hooks still in their mouth. More common though is they end up as fish food.

It’s a toss up.
A lot of times they will rust away but this isn’t quick.
Other times it’s fatal
Interestingly , on more than one occasion, I have caught fish with line extending from the rectum. Close examination revealed a hook imbedded there.
The hook worked loose and passed the digestive tract

If another critter eats a dead fish with a hook in it probably doesn’t do them much good either.

Remember the stomach acid in fish is quite strong. I have caught bass that trew up shad that half was well digested and the half not inside the stomach was still fresh. So a hook that is ingested and is exposed to this acid will rust and disappear quickly. A wound is different and depending upon how severe it is will determine whether the fish lives or not. Most will die , the deeper the hook was located the worse the situation , lip hooked chances of survival increase greatly !
Hook type if stainless then that can be trouble , other hook types that can rust help . Never good for any fish !

Do you have evidence? I caught a catfish with a jig in its gut. There was 12" of line coming out its mouth and when I cleaned the fish the hook was still intact but the tail on the jig was about gone. 2 hours on the table the plastic couldn't be identified. The hook showed rust but wasn't rusted thru.

I would not worry too much.
Even crabs and crawfish have to eat.

Absolutely no way to tell as there is no way of knowing where and how the hook lodged. Howard 285's comment should relieve your worry's
