Good afternoon,
Just moved to New Smyrna Beach Florida from NJ and Hatteras.
Going to start fishing from the surf near Ponce Inlet on the NSB side.
Any pointers on differences from NJ and Hatteras.
Anything I need to know?
Any tips on a rod and reel and why?
Thanks

Thanks
See them all the time
Spinners last week
I use a Diawa HT7Mag bait caster matched with a Tsunami Air-Wave 11' rod. Bought the first one and 2 weeks later bought the twin of it; loved it that much! Lightweight and casts a mile. Don't know the area so distance may be less of a factor for. you.

Welcome aboard a pelican. U Already have a suggestion from a neighbor.
Bait I use the Shimano bait caster and a old 10' custom rod I picked up at local tackle place the owner made. But it’s on it’s last legs. Looking to get a Penn Carnage 2 spinner 10’ or 11’ medium heavy if I can ever find one in stock. Checked the conventional one out and it’s one solid rod. Have a few other Penn surf rod’s just for lures can’t think of the names but they have really held up sizes 7’ - 9’ - 10’ depending on where I fish.
Definitely use a carbon graphite rod at least 10', 11 ' or 12' med/heavy.
13+15' rods take some
mastering.
You can cast all day.
Feather light with great sensitivity and all the strength. Glass rods are heavy and considered dead technology.
Thank you
I will check them out.
I currently have a Shimano Calcutta 400 and a Daiwa SL30SH.
Any thoughts?
I have to get 2 rods, my other rods are for a spinning reel.

My hands do get tired after a few hours of casting the surf with 9ft Ugly Stik but wondering if a pure graphite would bear up to a 35-40 lb striper?
Bait caster reels are a small version of a wench. Made to houst your fish. Spinner cast farther and you let the rod do the work. Bait casters can be shorter, but you have to set the drag adjustments more often. Tip: When trying to avoid bird nest, turn your reel vertical during the middle part of your cast. You go farther and get fewer nest.
For finess lures still go graphite. If your sending large baits and plan to sit and wait, any rod will work.
Thank you for all the tips
Happy fishing
