I own half dozen older ugly stx, 4 gx2 uglys never had one break not even 40 pound striper paired up with many sizes of Penns so go ahead and waste your money on the others! Salt life and tight lines forever.

Stones are coming - duck! Sorry it hit you - you ok? Still breathing - that’s good. LOL. Always have one on my boat in case I need to whip somebody.
Waste is a very strong term. Bass are smart cunning animals. Perhaps in saltwater sensitivity is not as big an issue, but is a grass or rock filled pond or lake sensitivity is a key factor. We’re not talking about a $600 Loomis rod, we’re talking about a step up in sensitivity with a difference of $50. It’s small price to pay for feeling a light bite you might otherwise had missed because of an average rod. Don’t get me wrong I’m not an Ugly Stik hater, I’m just saying for a few dollars more chances are your going to catch more fish and after all that’s the point.

I have been fishing with my USGX2 for a couple of months now, I catch crappie, bass, catfish and Bluegill where I’m at. All in I spent around $50. So what’s a good setup that’s an upgrade to this? Say if the GX2 is a 4 on a scale of 1-10, what’s a 5? I usually shop at Academy or Bass Pro. I’d be willing to buy online but I am really anxious about the pole being broken in the mail. I really don’t have any problems with it so far, and it works great, I’m just looking to buy something better for ~$100 or so?

For species you are fishing US is too good! I have several of them and no one never fail. I'm fishing for salmon, strieped bass, halibut, trout, large mouse bass, carp, sharks and never ever replace US for more expencive toys... Ispite of my arsenal: Lamiglass, Seeker, Fenwick, Shimano, Abu Garcia. The most lucky my rod is the old Big Fish by Pinnacle, which I've bought loooong time ago on sale when K-Mart went out of business... It is still great for any fish. My advise is: spend money for something else like good reels.

MHO: I would not worry about ordering on-line if you can find what you are looking for. If it is broken in shipment, the shipper will make good on it. I have never had any experience where a defective item was not made good. Justr Sayin....RJS
I ordered a Diawa medium heavy rod / fast action tip off the net...what arrived was a piece of rebar with a handle and guides on it....the downside of the internet purchase is not being able to feel it and see if its what you want.....in my opinion anyway.
The Man asked about $100.00 rods, and he gets buried with $130-$200 dollar suggestions. I don't understand what's so hard about dealing with HIS budget.

Dobyns Fury is a great line of rods. They usually run just a bit over your $100, like $109 - $119. American Legacy Fishing often has 20% off all Dobyns rods though which put them right there. Really nice rods for that price. Also, the Daiwa AirdX rods are pretty nice and under the $100 price.
And you could add Fenwick HMG for $99, St Croix Triumph for $89-$109.

Fly. That’s the first thing that popped into mi mind , but was hesitant to say it
A really good upgrade , using the scale described would be a Fenwick HMG.
That rod would be a solid 5 . It’s been around for a long time and has a solid reputation
Up it another point and a half would be the Shimano Exage at $100 it’s a surprisingly responsive rod
Then there is the St Croix Triumph. Good rod Entry level St Croix.
I’ve had all of these . Out of these 3 , I’d go with the Shimano. For the money , it’s the clear winner IMO
