Freshwater Weekly Fishing Report Week of April 7, 2021
Alan Henry
FAIR. Water clear 59 degrees; 5.56’ low. Black bass are great in spawn fishing less than 6 feet in more western cloudier waters amongst vegetation and timber with crankbaits, spinners, and worms. Crappie are fair, with jigs also coming shallower in the backs of coves and shallow shelves. Catfish are fair on live bait, cut bait, and stinkbait.
Amistad
GOOD. Water lightly stained; 67 degrees; 45.46’ low. Spawn has slowed, but the action has not. Black bass are good as action has slid down to around 8 feet with topwater success early as activity is staying high all day on soft plastic worms, crankbait, and smaller spinners. White bass are fair, suspending on points around 12 feet with spoons and small crankbait. Catfish are fair on deep points on shrimp, chicken livers, and stinkbait dough balls. Remember to stay on the Texas side of the lake unless you possess a Mexican Fishing License.
Arlington
FAIR. Water lightly stained; 63 degrees; 0.99 low. Largemouth bass are fair on crankbaits, chatter baits, spinners, and senkos on shorelines, creeks, and brush near creeks. Crappie are good near boat docks and creeks on minnows and jigs. Catfish are fair on punch baits and live bait.
Arrowhead
FAIR. Water stained; 59 degrees; 0.41’ low. Largemouth bass are good with worms and spinners working the typical vegetation spots. White bass are fair on shad on points but on the edge of 10 feet. Crappie are fair on jigs and minnows moving up creeks. Catfish are fair at all depths on cheese bait, stinkbait, and minnows.
Athens
GOOD. Water lightly stained; 61 degrees; 0.38 high. Largemouth bass are good on jerk baits, frogs, crankbaits, and football jigs working the riprap, timber, and shorelines. Crappie are good with minnows and jigs in standing timber, creeks, and boat docks. Catfish are good on cut bait. Sunfish are good on mealworms and bread pieces.
Austin
GOOD. Water clear; 64 degrees; 0.56 low. Largemouth bass are good on flipping jigs, bladed spinners, craws, and shad-like lipless crankbaits in 1-8’. Sunfish are good on cut earthworms and pieces of shrimp along ledges, boat docks, and shallow brush. Catfish are good with punch bait, chicken liver, and earthworms.
B.A. Steinhagen
GOOD. Water stained; 65 degrees; 0.29’ low. Largemouth bass are great still in the delta between the Neches and Angelina with worms and jigs. All bass should be done spawning by next week, so fish while the getting is good! Crappie are fair working creeks and timber on jigs. Catfish are good on cut and prepped bait, moving further north in the lake.
Bastrop
GOOD. Water clear 65 degrees; Largemouth bass are good fishing suspended jerk baits, crankbaits, and soft plastics near creeks, brush, and shorelines. Crappie are good on minnows and jigs in creeks. Channel and blue catfish are fair on punch bait and live bait.
Belton
GOOD. Water clear; 60 Degrees; 0.84 low. Black bass are fair near shorelines and coves with jerk baits, spinners, and chatter baits. White bass are good on the main lake points and in the creeks with spoons, silver slabs, and white swimbaits. Hybrid stripers are fair with swimbaits in the main lake from 25-40’. Crappie are good on minnows and jigs in brush piles and creeks. Catfish are good on chicken liver, punch bait, and cut bait.
Benbrook
FAIR. Water lightly stained; 60 degrees; 1.48 low. Largemouth bass are fair fishing poppers, crankbaits, and jerk baits near shorelines, creek beds, and points. Crappie are fair on minnows and jigs, fishing structures, and brush piles. Hybrid striped bass are fair with live bait. White bass are good with swimbaits and spoons in the creeks, channels, and humps. Catfish are fair with punch bait or cut bait.
Bob Sandlin
GOOD. Water clear; 60 degrees; 0.08 high. Black bass are good on top waters, finesse jigs, chatter baits, frogs, and skirted jigs in 2-8’’ near shorelines, brush, and in the creeks. Crappie are good on minnows and chartreuse jigs in brush piles and near creeks. Catfish are good on cut bait and punch bait in 8-15 near baited holes.
Braunig
GOOD. Water lightly stained; 64-67 degrees; Largemouth bass are good in vegetation and shallow along with the rip rap on topwater, plastic worms, spinners, and jigs working less than 6 feet, and some days you can’t go too shallow. Striped bass are fair, looking for deeper ledges. Red drum are good on live bait watch for activity mid-lake. Catfish are good on live bait and cheese bait.
Bridgeport
GOOD. Water clear; 58 degrees; 4.20 low. Black bass are good on plastic worms, senkos, flukes, and square billed crankbaits fishing main lake points near riprap, creeks, rocky shorelines, and shallow channel ledges. Crappie are good on minnows and jigs, fishing bridges, creeks, and brush piles. White bass are good on main lake channels and creeks with swimbaits and silver spoons. Hybrid stripers are fair along the main lake channel with swimbaits. Catfish are good on cut bait, chicken liver, and prepared bait.
Brownwood
GOOD. Water stained; 58 degrees; 3.26 low. Largemouth bass are fair with jerk baits, bladed spinners, crankbaits, and skirted jigs in coves, shorelines, and timber in 2-10’. Crappie are fair on minnows in brush piles and near bridge pilings, with some crappie caught in the creeks. White bass and hybrids are good on spoons and swimbaits in the creeks. Catfish are good on punch bait, chicken liver, and cut bait in 12-25’ near baited areas.
Buchanan
GOOD. Water clear; 60 degrees; 7.13 low. Largemouth bass are good with crankbaits, finesse jigs, suspended jerk baits, and spinners in shallow water. Striped bass are good along the river channel with live bait and swimbaits. White bass are good on silver spoons, crankbaits, and swimbaits in the creeks and main lake points. Crappie are good on minnows and jigs in 12-28’ fishing docks, timber, and brush piles. Channel catfish are good on punch bait. Blue cats are good on cut bait.
Caddo
GOOD. Water clear; 61 degrees; 1.40 high. Largemouth bass are good working bladed spinners, square billed crankbaits, skirted jigs, and drop shots near coves and creek mouths. Crappie are good on minnows and jigs near brush piles and creeks. White bass are good on slabs in the creeks and shallow channels. Chain pickerel are good with spoons and small jigs. Catfish are fair on punch bait, chicken liver, and cut bait fishing baited holes near channels and timber edges.
Calaveras
FAIR. Water stained; 66-68 degrees; Red drum are great on live bait staying on the surface activity, ready to move. Black bass are good on topwater early, staying away from north wind days on worms and crankbait working around 8 feet. Hybrid striped bass are good on rattle traps staying around a bit depth of 6-8 feet normally in a depth of 12 feet total. Catfish are good on stinkbait, chicken livers, and cut shad.
Canyon Lake
GOOD. Water clear; 61 degrees; 6.15 low. Striper fishing is good along the river channel edge with live bait and umbrella rigs. White bass are good in creeks and wind-driven points with swimbaits, silver spoons, and rooster tails. Largemouth bass are good with lizards, frogs, crankbaits, plastic worms, finesse jigs, and shaky heads in 2-8’. Smallmouth bass are good on small swimbaits, plastic grubs, and small cranks along rock ledges and rocky shorelines. Catfish are good with prepared baits and cut bait. Crappie are good with live minnows and jigs in creeks channels and river channel.
Cedar Creek
GOOD. Water lightly stained; 59 degrees; 0.07 low. Largemouth bass are good working bladed spinners, football jigs, and lipless crankbaits on creeks, shorelines, and coves. Hybrids and sand bass are good on main lake points and creeks with swimbaits, slabs, and jigging spoons. Crappie are excellent with minnows and jigs in brush piles, near creeks, boat docks, and bridges. Catfish are fair in 6-12’ with cut bait and live bait.
Choke Canyon
GOOD. Water lightly stained; 66-68 degrees; 23.11’ low. Largemouth bass are great working on plastic worms over brush and off points. White bass are fair, staying tied with small crankbaits and plastics off steeper points. Catfish are consistently good on larger live bait, cut baits, and stinkbait.
Cisco
GOOD. Water lightly stained; 59 degrees; 6.07’ low. Largemouth bass are good working shallow as spawn finally appears to be starting in timber and vegetation on spinners, worms, and crankbait. Sunfish are fair to good in shallow structures and vegetation structures on nightcrawlers and cutworms. Crappie are fair on jigs in creeks, and water covering structures. Catfish are fair with slowing movement on stinkbait, nightcrawlers, and chicken livers night and day.
Coleman
FAIR. Slightly stained. 59 degrees. 3.44’ low. Hybrid stripers are fair on rattletraps that are very actively feeding. Largemouth bass are good fishing worms and reeled baits around 6 feet. Catfish are fair using stinkbait and cut bait around cove entrances within 4 feet of the bottom.
Conroe
GREAT. Water stained; 64 degrees; 0.21’ low. Largemouth bass are great on worms, and crankbait. If you don’t get a bite in the structure within 6-10 casts, keep moving. Crappie are good on live bait wanting structure in coves and creeks. Hybrid striped bass are good following baitfish on rattletraps. Catfish are good on stinkbait and cut bait. Sunfish are good with live worms or crickets in shallow water.
Cooper
Good. Water stained; 57 degrees; 0.15 high. Largemouth bass are fair on shallow diving crankbaits, soft plastics, bladed spinners, and skirted jigs. The white bass and hybrids are good in 25-35’ with slabs and over humps, ridges, and in main lake creeks with spoons and rooster tails. Crappie are good with minnows and jigs on brush piles and near timber. Catfish are fair on cut bait and in punch bait.
Corpus Christi Lake
GOOD. Water stained; 66 degrees; 8.40’ low. Largemouth bass are great retreating to a depth of around 10-5 feet, working bass jigs, worms, crankbait, and spinners. White bass are fair off major points around 15 feet on crankbait. Crappie are fair with live bait under large structures. Catfish are fair to good on cut bait, and cheese bait.
Eagle Mountain
GOOD. Water clear; 61 degrees; 2.08 low. Black bass are fair fishing creature baits, suspended jerk baits, jigs, and bladed spinners near shallow timber, brushy shorelines, boat docks, and points. White bass are good with swimbaits, fishing creeks, and windy points. Crappie are good on minnows and jigs working docks, submerged brush, and timber in creeks. Catfish are fair on earthworms, cut bait, and punch bait.
Falcon
GOOD. Water stained north and clearer south; 68 degrees; 43.55’ low. Fishing remains great! Currently, catching 8 pound plus black bass is a rarity. Black bass are great on gravel flats, some mid-depth brush and points fishing crankbait, and thicker Carolina rigged worms with dipped tails. Crappie are good working shallow brush and some of the same flats that have bass with the water so low. Catfish are excellent fishing all over the lake on most all baits. Remember to stay on the Texas side unless you possess a Mexican Fishing License.
Fayette
FAIR. Water clear; 64 degrees; Largemouth bass are fair on crankbaits, spinners, and wacky worms Sunfish are fair on cut earthworms. Catfish are fair on earthworms, shrimp, and cut bait near baited areas.
Fork
FAIR. Water lightly stained; 59-62 degrees; 0.35 low. Largemouth bass are fair on bladed spinners, crankbaits, jerk baits, curly-tailed worms and skirted jigs in 2-8’. White and yellow bass are fair with spoons and swimbaits in the creeks and feeder arms. Crappie are good on minnows and jigs near docks and creeks. Catfish are slow on punch bait and cut bait in 8-20’.
Ft. Phantom Hill
FAIR. Water stained; 60 degrees; 2.59’ low. White and hybrid striped bass are looking into coves with minnows and rattletraps. Largemouth bass are good, with all largemouth spawning under 7 feet on spinners, crankbait, and buzzbaits near vegetation. Crappie are good on jigs close to creeks and shady coves. Catfish are fair at night on cut shad and stinkbait.
Gibbons Creek
FAIR. Water stained; 66 degrees; 2.02’ low. Largemouth bass are great moving to points and brush still above 12 feet on crankbaits, worms, and topwater. Crappie are fair on jigs getting action in structures below 8 feet. Catfish are fair on live shad deeper, staying close to points around 15 feet.
Graham
FAIR. Water clear; 55 degrees; 1.52 low. Largemouth bass are fair on stick baits, jigs, and suspended jerk baits in timber and near docks, points, shorelines, and timber near a creek channel. Crappie are fair on minnows and jigs in creeks, brush piles, and boat docks. White bass are good on rooster tails and spoons in creeks and on points. Hybrid stripers are fair on live bait in 25-45’. Catfish are fair on shrimp, cut bait, and punch bait near baited areas.
Granbury
GOOD. Water clear; 61 degrees; 0.18 low. Largemouth bass are fair on chatter baits, suspended jerk baits, lizards, and football jigs in 1-8’ near main lake points and secondary points as well as shorelines and coves. Crappie fishing is good around boat docks and creeks with minnows and jigs. Catfishing is fair with cut bait and punch bait. Stripers are good with live bait and swim baits along the main lake channel in 35-45’.
Granger
GOOD. Water clear; 61 degrees; 0.43 high. Black bass are fair on jerk baits, chatter baits and spinners near shorelines, brushy creeks, and points in 2-8’. Crappie are good on minnows and jigs in creeks and shallow channels. White bass are good on small swimbaits, spoons, and blade baits near main lake points and in the creeks. Catfish are fair on punch bait and cut. Yellow cats are fair with live bait.
Grapevine
GOOD. Water lightly stained; 59 degrees; 0.15 high. Largemouth bass are good on jerk baits, hair jigs, lizards, and frogs near timber, points, and shorelines. White bass are good in 20-35’ with slabs and white swimbaits near main lake points channel and in the creeks. Crappie are good on minnows and jigs in marinas and near submerged structure. Catfish are fair on punch bait and cut bait.
Greenbelt
FAIR. Water stained; 57 degrees; 39.47’ low. Black bass are fair as activity picks up, especially on topwaters where you can. Spawning fish are inconsistent because they are lacking structures on spinners, thick-weighted worms, and jigs. Catfish are fair on live bait lake-wide. Walleye are fair, moving around 6-10 feet of path. Sunfish and crappie are fair, staying shallow around most covered structures. White bass are slow.
