It depends on how big your boat is, on the regulated equipment. Lights are only necessary at night.

It’s a 10 foot twin troller...Lakes and ponds is it..
I just l[ooked it up. For less than 16 feet, lights must be serviceable and used at night, sound signal device(horn, whistle),backfire flame repressor, fire extinguisher and a pfd for each occupant.

Yeah but if your on a big lake or a reservoir and break down it's still a good idea to have one, they're not too expensive, getting towed is better than rowing all the way back.

just search NJ boating regulations
Thanks I see it now..I need to take a safety course also?? It’s been years since I fished on state water I mostly fished private lakes and ponds..
Never hurts to bone up on water safety, if only to inform your passengers. If you think might need it, then you should
What in the world is a "backfire flame repressor" ? Never even heard the term. Add-on thing ?
Well Guys I got my Boat safety certificate on Sunday.. I have to say its fairly involved with what you need to know. Jet skis, sail boats, alcohol, dingies and booie’s,military ships etc..8+ hrs on line course and the in person test of 60 question...I did surprisingly well I though but I did get one wrong..
Hope to get out in my new boat this weekend.. Thanks for the help guys!
