I don't know what you call it, we've all been there and it goes like this:
Angler #1- whoa dude. Did you just get hammered?
Angler #2- No
#1- but dude, I thought your rod tip get almost to the water?
#2- nope, just the bottom
#1- sure looked like a bite to me man
#2- nothing yet
Two minutes of silence and beer sipping go by...
#2- how in the %##% did I miss that fish?

I believe that is the feeling you get when you feel a non-typical tap through the line, through the rod to your hand. It wasnโ€™t a dull thud from a stump, nor a click from a rock. At times a fish is not trying to eat, but trying to chase your lure away. I blame the fish for not being totally committed. ๐Ÿ˜‰๐Ÿ˜‚

TLC = Total Lack of Commitment on the fishโ€™s part. Thatโ€™s what I tell the Grandson, anyway!

"Non committed fish" in all my years of fishing I have encountered many of them. They are like puppies who have eaten but see some food and greed makes them want to at least get a close up smell of it. After a taste they find they aren't hungry any more. Down here we look at our electronics and see so many baitfish we wonder how we ever get a bite at all. A fish could lay around with his mouth open and never have to make an effort just let bait fish swim into their mouths. I think they do some chasing just for sport. "Non committed fish" is a great way of putting it.

Iโ€™m looking for some colloquial terms for a misleading bite on a hook.

Iโ€™m looking for interesting expressions for a novel. The setting is somewhat medieval, so the more obscure or hickish expressions would be best. I grew up in the country, we just only used trot lines.
