Thinking of getting into surf fishing. A few questions about gear

Yeah I usually use 20 with a 80lb shock leader because their gills in the hooks and stuff would break the line I forgot about the shock leader very important
One of the reasons for a longer pole is so you’re line enters the water behind the breakers, distance isn’t as important as you think.if you can’t afford a new pole try a taller sand spike and get closer to the surf ,hip waders will help keep you dry, medium action will work fine might take a little longer to bring in a big fish but so what thats half the fun
Barefoot and I can’t get pregnant!😂 I think I’ve caught some of my biggest/best fish in the surf within 20 yards of the shoreline! On a scientific note; gamefish thrive ( no matter where, salt, freshwater, species of inshore fish ) on pushing their chosen or available meal either to the surface, or, to the shallows. When using artificial lures, fishing “ uphill “ triggers more fish to bite! For them, the escaping forage is less tolerable to pass by than a meal running into deeper waters with more effort to obtain it! Example; fishing a point... most bass anglers ( from a boat ) will cast towards the point and reel back. Leaving little room in the strike zone! If that boater would simply adjust and cast from shallow to deep, their chance of catching a bass increases hugely due to the FACT that bass ( fish in general ) almost always push bait up against something shallow than chase a meal deep! Only the facts Mam!
Anyone fishing the surf on the gulf? I’ve never tried surf fishing and my family is going in June and would love to have some info on what rod and reel to use as well as weights and bait.

I only have a 7ft M weight/M action rod and most people I've talked to recommend a longer, heavier weight rod to get over the breakers. I'm trying to avoid buying as much new gear as possible. Should I get waders and try to use my current rod while standing in the water, or should I invest in a proper surf rod?
I'd like to learn flyfishing at some point and do have a flyrod so waders would be useful eventually. But I'd also like to enjoy surf fishing so I'm split either way. Any thoughts?

Fuzzy--If you have a size8 shoe I have a twice worn, felt soled, booted ( actually part of the wader ). They cost me $150 several years ago at Cabelas. If your interested repy.
7'6" medium heavy rod w/ 30# braid and 20# fluro leader. 1 1/2 to 2 oz round with the hole thru the middle sinker ( bring a 3 oz to make sure in case the current is ripping. 2/0 circle hook and shrimp. You'll be catchin ! cast just beyond the breakers--second set if you can reach them--there is usually a trough where the wave creates itself right there. Have fun and bring your sunblock, ice and a cooler full of non alcoholic fluids--I always prefer water as it seems thats the only thing I need to prevent dehydration on the sun. Good luck. Bobber22
Hey, I have been surf fishing my whole life in Brigantine, NJ. My go-to is an 11ft med/heavy Tsunami rod with a Penn Battle 4000 reel and Powerpro 20lb braided line and a 50lb shocker line on the end for distance casting. Hope that helps. I like Penn reels but you can get tsunami rod and reel combo is just as good. Definitely need waders for stripers.

Ocean Beach Pier in San Diego is a great pier to fish. I used to use a 7' baitcasting rod, Abu 6500 CS Mag reel and 12 # mono to throw 1 oz spoons to hungry barracudas and bonito every Saturday morning at sunrise when i lived there. Another great lure is called the "Bonito splasher" which is nothing more than a casting bubble (you fill with water) , a 6' length of mono, and a large white fly. You throw it out there and pop it. The bubble arouses the fish who see the fly and hit it!
Good luck with your fishing...
