Baitcaster troubleshooting - understanding when to use brakes vs tension knob?

I have the SLX (base model) with 12lb seaguar fluoro.

what i have noticed is for long casts, what seems to happen is the bait will travel in an arc and then towards the end, instead of ending in a beautiful parabolic shape, the bait seems to just kind of stop traveling forward and falls almost vertically into the water. an exaggeration of this would be like if i made a cast and then halfway through it i put my thumb firmly on the spool, so the forward travel stopped and it just dropped down to the water.

would this indicate my brakes are too high? or my tension knob is too high? i have been playing around with 3 breaks on, lower tension, 2 breaks on higher tension, 1 break on, much higher tension (bad idea), even 4 brakes on and very low tension knob, but the problem seems to be persistent.

i wanted to ask you more experienced people before i risk 30 minutes picking out birds nests again.

the casting distance that i get is decent, comparable to those around me with nicer gear, but the way the lure behaves before it hits the water makes me feel like i could be doing something better.

Is there a possibility of the line overlapping at that point on your spool causing it to catch and stop the line from feeding off? I'm new but have seen it on some of my spinning reels?
