I regularly buy flies thinking I'll remember their name and be able to recognize them next to my other flies, however end up forgetting the majority of them.
Does any one have tips/techniques for remembering them? Or those who have them all memorized is this just due to significant time fly fishing or memorizing from a book?

Like all things in fly fishing, it just takes time.

Nothing helps you remember the names like tying your own flies, it's much more personal than buying them from a bin.

I have no idea what most of the fly patterns in my box are called. Except the little beadhead fuzzy tannish ones, and the brownish floaty ones with wings.

I'm like nighthawk, "you know, the furry black one". Been fly fishing since the mid-60's, still can't remember the names of more than a dozen, though I have probably 200-300 ??, never actually counted...at least 5 good-sized boxes, a couple of small ones. Just do your best at remembering which one and where, when you have a great day on the water. The names of flies are almost as obscure as the names they give the cannabis strains here in Oregon ! Can't remember them either ! Lol.
Thanks for the laugh it made my day!
