My father in law and I were best friends for over 40 years until The Lord took him home.
But, we weren’t above practical joking each other. When I first met him when I was a young man he would stick his finger in his ear past the first joint. He would challenge me to do the same. Weeks later I noticed that he was missing the tip of his finger. He then told me that he had cut it off on a meat slicer in the Navy and that they never found it. (that was true)
One day while eating at a Cracker Barrel I noticed some wooden eggs for sale in the gift shop.They looked real. I decided to buy one and slip it into my inlaws egg crate in their refrigerator. I bought a brown and white egg because I wasn’t sure which they had. While visiting with them the next week I slipped a brown wooden egg into their egg carton when they weren’t looking. And I waited.......
Weeks passed and neither my wife or I heard a word about the egg. We invited them out to dinner. At dinner I mentioned that a local egg company had put a “special” egg in a carton with a prize of $10,000 to who ever found it. Still nothing. About 10 minutes later my father in law said “You know ma was making some hard boiled eggs a while ago and couldn’t crack one of the eggs. I even got a hammer and couldn’t break it! We had the $10,000 egg and I threw it out!”
My wife and I exploded in laughter and came clean with the joke. They laughed too and he looked at me and said—Good one! That was 20 years ago but every time my wife makes hard boiled eggs we reminisce in laughter.....and miss him a little more.
