When I put the 25 Merc on my aluminum boat, I bolted it on as well as the clamps on transom. There are 2-4 bolt holes on the outside edges of the bracket. Drill thru the transom, just calk the bolts thoroughly to keep water out of the transom, and use larger "fender"washers on the inside to spread the load. Use Stainless Steel hardware so it doesn't rust.

From theft or from vibration loss?
From theft get a good insurance policy. From vibration or hitting something underwater some small motors have an area you can apply a chain from motor to boat. My yamaha 9hp had such a feature .

Yes, adequate Insurance is your best recourse. A determined thief can eventually defeat any attempt to keep your motor on the boat. Just Sayin...RJS

Didn't mention whether you trailer the boat or if you lock trailer. I had one stolen from ramp parking in '78 and ever since have locked it to hitch.
where do you store this boat
careful what you do; may just steal the motor AND the boat
reason i ask where you store it: when i lived in fla all the places that sold boats removed the lower units be cause of theft
now i live in maine. the motors all have the lower units on them
i was surprised at how many cars parked at walmart and other stores have the keys in the ignition or on the seat
honesty still lives in some places
i thank God multiple times daily since i moved up here

I had a big truck delivery to a Panama City, Fl marine outlet full of inboard and outboard boat engines. Arrived late evening, parked behind business and was getting ready to sleep for the next morning delivery when a Harley pulled up with a couple riding on it tried to get me to park in a 'better' location adjacent to a lounge 1/2 mile away. I agreed, they left the area, then I called local police dept to request a night-long rolling patrol for the engines and myself.
I have a small chain from the small outboard to the boat in case i would hit something and knock the motor off the boat as far as storage I live in the country I have dogs and I have guns 😁
I use the type of lock that slides across the clamp handles as well as bolt the o/b to the trailer. Use nylock nuts. They take much longer to remove. It will not stop the professional thief but may send him/her and the opportunist thief down the road to find an easier target. The thief also knows it is harder to fence a motor with broken clamp handles. I also chain my downriggers and trolling motor to the boat. Again, it will not stop the pro, but may curtail the opportunist. Most thieves are not interested in your motor for what it is, they are interested in quick cash. If it s not easy to fence, it is not a good target. I learned a long time ago, after loosing a new pair of oars, to paint my new oars ugly with house paint. One night in Maine, the dock had all the tender oars stolen except the ugly ones. The uglier, the better. As for the pro thief, insurance is the bottom line.

Agreed. That’s what I did with a Merc 9.5.
Agree. The quickest way to steal a rig is pull the hitch pin, swing the trailer around and re hitch to thieves truck. Less than one minute and the whole rig with or without boat is gone.
