Just an update. I was at 18 not including saltwater. I was lucky to travel extensively for business and usually had my evenings free. You know what that means. I packed a travel rod and reel. In my long life, I've fished Puerto Rico, Mexico, Texas, Oregon, Washington, Minnesota, Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin, Florida, Kentucky, Missouri, California, North Carolina, South Carolina, Alaska, and British Columbia. These were all shore-bound close to my hotel but not necessarily the best spots and all with artificial baits except Florida where I was on a fishing pier. I fished dead shrimp from 7 PM till 11:30 PM. What stopped me was my arms fell off. I couldn't set the hook anymore I was just too tired. I meet up with some other guys on the pier who were there on a long-term project. They had a large cooler 3/4s full of sand trout which I added to. Absolutely the best fishing I've ever had. I must have caught over 200 fish in 4 1/2 hours. The biggest disappointment was Sidney Australia where I never got a chance to put a line in the water.

Hi ! - If by 'northern' species
you're referring to trout, they
may be closer than you think !
I know that Texas stocks some trout in some of their man-made, local community lakes/ponds;
you just need to check their Fish
& Game website ! Many are also unaware that Texas has a 'trophy-trout' fishing area - it runs from the dam at Canyon Lake down to
the next dam at New Braunfels, and holds some pretty big large-mouths, smallmouths, Guadalupe and stripers, as well ! You'd need to brush up on the special regs
for that area to be sure you're
legal, first ! Hope you don't mind the drive, as this location is about 4 hours south of you !

Thanks Big A. I’ve been fortunate enough to catch a few trout over the years. Some rainbows on the White River in Arkansas and some browns on the Little Provo in Utah. By ‘northern’ I was referring to walleye, sauger, pickerel, muskelunge, northern pike and tiger musky. Once stood in the mouth of the giant musky at the Freshwater Fishing Hall of Fame; but that’s as close as I’ve been🙂

However, I have one unusual catch. My father in law and I were trolling a proto-type of a new Bomber that later would be called the Water Dog. It wasn't even painted, just white base coat. The reason was Bomber wanted to determine if the use of an aluminum diving bill would wear too much. All the earlier Bombers had bills made of brass. To make it work, the Water Dog had to have a larger bill, and brass was too heavy. So we were testing these water dogs by trolling in Texoma. I had out a lot of line and was using a Shakespear direct drive reel. Suddently, I caught something that really hit hard and since the reel did not have the modern braking system, but was a direct drive, the fish pulled out a few yards of line and did it so fast it burned a sizeable blister on my left thumb. The scar lasted for years. I finally reel it is and had a Kentucky Spotted bass of about 3 pounds. It was the very first fish ever caught on this lure. Just Sayin...RJS

Mr Samples, Im really glad you shared the history of the water dog lure origin with us. Thank you sir. 🙂 I’ve tried to collect a few old wooden ones over the years. Seemed like an excellent name for me on FS when I signed up.

I think I've caught 17. Nothing in the pike or musky family.
17, largest 51lb carp. For reference, I’m a size 14 shoe.
16. Largest 32 lb carp, 2nd biggest 12.2lb walleye
Whoops! 2nd biggest, 14lb rainbow trout.
