So my go to is fluorocarbon line. I started surf fishing and now have fluorocarbon with a braid backer one would say. To me fluorocarbon is the best yet to have it fail me is there a real reason to have the braid backer? Or should I go all 10lbs fluorocarbon and leave the heavy stuff to the soaking bait rod?

Braid is not for backing. Braid would be your main line with a fluorocarbon leader. Remember your knot is your weakest link. If bass fishing I use straight braid or straight fluorocarbon depending on whether I want a line to be more buoyant or less. Bass aren’t line shy but if your concerned about line shy fish stick with fluorocarbon.
Really would not use 10 lb flor or mono for surf, to many fish in surf will break you off or will bite threw the line. Would go at least to 20 lb leader on 15/20 lb braid or straight 20 lb flor.
20lb leader for salt water is a good choice and 20lb or 30lb braid .
6# ANDE pink mono in the surf. no braid, no floro, IMHO thats cheating
