Welcome to the Forum, J4, Good Luck! That's help, isn't it?
I’ll receive it as encouraging!
If it swims in freshwater, it is in that river. I am not a catfisherman, but I would trust those on here that use chicken livers near the bottom in an eddy or slack water, typically near a snag or deep hole or a current break. I hope this helps, good luck!
I never fished the Mississippi in Iowa, but I have seen some awful big cats noodling in the Skunk River north west of Mt Pleasant, Iowa. Don't even say it. The statue of limitations on my hand fishing ran out nearly 60 years ago. Teens will be teens.
I don't care for chicken liver, to soft and hard to keep on the hook. Used lot of beef liver and it stays on the hook really well. Don't get calf liver, also to soft. Most the guy's on the catfish forum I'm on use either live or cut bait. Say a video the other day and the guy simply filleted a small fish of some kind and used it. My own favorite here has been chicken breast soaked in strawberry kool-aide and garlic, believe it or not, works great. Have tried whole frozed uncooked shrimp but haven't got anything on them.

Hey J welcome. I would find a good stink bait or blood bait to start with, also try hot dog cut into inch pieces or nightcrawlers. You may try close to a lock and dam to start as they seem to like to lay and feed in that type of location. Good luck and have fun no matter what you do.
