One way to find out how much electronics inpact fishing. Let the pros have a depth finder with just depth n water temp. Then fish a muti day tournament. In the beginning of pro fishing if you remember there wasn't a limit n they caught plenty of fish. So many the instituted the bag limit.FISH FOOD FOR THOUGHT

my experience with fish finders is quite limited and limiting. I bought an entry level small screen black and white unit. Hooked it up on my canoe. and trolled my local lake. Whelp, I was so affected by the screen that I'd no longer work an area. Seems the sport of tagging fish on screen reduced my actual fishing time. Ha! Negative effect.

My 1st was black n white. Had trouble seeing in bright sun. Got color screen big difference. I have a 4" raymarine dragon fly with DI. Graphics are excellent. Have it on my 9'pond boat. Price was $100 or so

I use gps and depth finder for ocean fishing. I use a chart to look at the bottom and the electronics enable me to find the spots I want to fish. Word of mouth and basic biology of the species is more important to finding preferred habitats. My finder does mark fish (at least it shows spots near the bottom, but I don’t know if they are fish or not.) I also assume that I am looking at the past on the scroll so I’m not sure how valid the info is even if they are directly under the boat.

I don't agree with you. I'm 73 and I've seen a ton of improvements in the gear we fisherfolk use over the years. But I've never seen anything that carries a guarantee that you will catch fish or they'll give you your money back. There's a reason for that. When Garmin comes out with a electronic fish catcher and it does everything but reel in the fish, and it carries that guarantee, then I'll start worrying.

The tackle companies put out such realistic and lifelike lures now. I have to stop and consciously remember that their primary job is not necessarily to help the fisherman catch fish, it is to catch the fisherman.😆. Fish don’t have money.

Any fishermen out there will admit that technology (fish finders such as the Vexilar, Garmin Livescope, fish finder with sidescan and GPS plotting) is making it exponentially easier to catch fish. A lot of it takes the patience and skill out of the sport. Anglers can boost their harvest rates with ease, because a screen showed them where the fish was in the water column.

Despite this, people love the technology, and it just seems to be getting better every day. I don't blame people who use the ultra high tech fish finders, because if I could afford one I would probably buy it. I am just worried the fish won't be able to keep up with new and powerful tools available to the public.

Does anyone agree with me? Not trying to have a "boomer mentality" per say, I just think it's a valid concern.

Any fishermen out there will admit that technology... (show quote)

You can quit fishing. There is limits and so many laws about each fishery that if people are not poachers the fish should be just fine and continue reproducing. The modern fishing equipment including electronics do not make fish bite. Fishing people still need to fool the fish regardless of the fact you can locate the fish it does not mean they will take your bait.

Like my grandma used to say, you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink.

Bigger n better toys aid us but doesn't finish the job for us. Many yrs ago i hunted with friends. I had my 06 one came home from Germany with a 300 mag. Rest had 30/30. Following yrs those guys showed up with expensive 300 mags. Sure didn't make them better shots or hunters. Just cost them more to miss n more recoil to absorb. Egos make people fo dumb stuff. Use what works for you.

The technology that is diminishing the fishing is 99% of the youth have no interest in fishing unless it's a video game. Try to get a millennial away from their electronics to go admire the beauty of being out on the lake.
GOOD LUCK!

I gotta agree it seems like we’re loosing sight of what hunting and fishing is all about. Technology keeps advancing by leaps and bounds and the only thing that remains the same are the fish and game.
Why someone needs to spend a fortune to rip across the water at 80mph to catch a two pound bass puzzles me. I don’t want to be around that sort of thinking.
Same goes for hunting. I could fill a book with all the crap to make it easier for the hunter to outsmart a deer.
What sort of accomplishment do they get out of that? This attitude of taking all the mystery out of it with increased technology is what’s going to kill blood sports someday.

Electronics only add to the experience, they don't catch fish. I've fished some of the same spots for years, even before electronics. Difference is now I can pull up to a spot and know if fish are there or not. It doesn't mean you're gonna catch them because you have electronics, they do help to see the fish but the fisherman has to do the catching. Relaxing while fishing to me is catching, not setting looking around wondering if I should be somewhere else. Big difference to me is as I get older I can't spend as much time on the water as I did when I was young. It's nice to know if you're fishing dead water or if the fish just aren't biting. Now when I go home I know if it something I was doing that kept me from catching or was it just the fish weren't biting.

As fishermen technology does give us a big advantage but we do still have to get them to bite. On the hunting shows there is no fair chase. Stands everywhere food plots to lure them in. If it works for them ok. Personally i would get no satisfaction hunting that way.
