Ugly Stik

Hello all, I’m going to be buying my first ugly stik. I’ve been looking at the Gx2 and was just curious what the best length would be. I just plan on fishing in some local rivers and at the parks with ponds. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Welcome. I would say that would be based on what type of fish you're fishing for I have medium to heavy for catfishing and I also have light for panfish or medium light for panfish and bass

A 7’ Medium paired with a decent reel sized to balance it out will suit you well. Good luck!

For the type of fishing you mentioned, a light- to medium-
action rod in the 6' to 7' length, paired with a decent (not
exhorbitant) reel in the 2000/
2500 range should serve you
well ! My go-to set-up is
Shimano reels paired up with UglyStik rods; they're generally priced as follows - GX2/$35 -
Pro Lite/$40 - Elite/$50, and the
newer, carbon rods run about
$80 ! Shimano reels start at around $20 and run up into several hundred dollars, depending on model you
want/can afford ! Most of mine are usually around $35 to $50 !

I've got older ugly sticks had them for years. They are as close ti bullet .proof as you can get. I would suggest the 7' easier to cast lite baits n lures

GX2's are a great rod for the $$. I pair mine with Pflueger President reels and use 7'. Depending on the weight of the rod, get a sized reel that would balance out accordingly :-)

I have used Ugly Sticks for 40 years. All advice above is good advice. All I can add is hold different rods in your hands and buy the one that feels the best. It will serve you well.

I really wonder how many thousand Ugly Stiks the forum members actual own and use and will continue to use and love them until their death beds. I personally have 4 that get used a few times every year and they are not going away. I have other brands I use for trolling kok’s, trout and fishing for Muskies but always have an ugly on board. They have never failed me and take an inordinate amount of abuse. Just my point of view.

They are made out of the cheapest materials, they are heavy with little sensitive, EVA foam grips that get wet and slippery and slimy.
They are very hard to break but so is a telephone pole, so would you like to fish with a telephone pole.
Spend a few bucks more and buy a decent graphite rod.
I have been saying this for a long time on this website and always get an argument from many about Ugly Stik’s.Fishing rods are like tools, pay a few bucks more and you will be better off in the long run.
Buy once cheap and you will buy again.

I have been to factories where they manufacture rods, some of the finest made.
If you want to buy a rod that will probably never break, they buy an Ugly Stik.If you want a fishing tool with good graphite cork grips and twice as light, then buy a decent rod for a few bucks more.
Take care of it and it will last as long as your Ugly Stik and you will be much happier with your purchase.
