I know, but it still catches the wind, right? Or does it work off wave action? I got no idea how a sea anchor works. Battleships ain't got no sea anchors that I know of. Help me out here Boats!

Well spirit, the boat anchor, parachute goes down in the water, you let out your rope a ways and tie it to the bow. The wind blows your boat along faster than the parachute can drag through the water, so it keeps the bow pointed into the wind. Hope that make sense?
If you look at the pic again, you'll see that the parachute is actually down under the water.
We also use them to slow down your drift when fishin and you're driftin too fast.

Kinda like a Drag Chute keeps a Top Fueler pointed straight in the shutdown area. Just the opposite way.
I figured a California guy would get that.

I've still got mine in the cellar somewhere, used to use it drifting for Fluke with the big boat. If I remember correctly, mine is more cone shaped, with a releasable flap on the end.

I have a smaller one I'm gonna give my fishin partner Brad for when we drift for halibut. It can get windy out on Tomales Bay and I just never use it where and how I fish in my boat.

I know. I was wondering if he had a navigation radar in there. A long time ago I used to work on them.
No, no radar yet. I go to an island 26 miles from port and there is a CG station and lots of traffic around the island so I feel pretty safe. Also lots of coves to hide out is it gets shitty... coming home if the fog hits is when it gets scary. With COVID there are literally 30 container ships withing 5 miles of the harbor entrance and in the fog that would get hairy if you're in a hurry. radar would fix that :-) See the map attached...
