I agree with most that was said but I don't think I need $1,000 rod and reel to catch a fish 😁

Right. It don’t take high end gear to catch fish. That’s why ALL reels don’t cost $600 and ALL rods don’t cost $500
There are really good dependable offerings for just about every price point.
Some are exceptional for the cost.
Take Pfluger President spinning reels. These fish much better than their price point.

It also don’t take a $75000 pick up to drive to work.
It also don’t take a $2500 shotgun to kill a quail
And it definitely don’t take a $80000 bass boat to have a good time on the water
Yet these things sell every day

Whitey. I agree with that. That's why i like the carbon lite 2.0 baitcaster n carbon lite 2.0 rods or abu veritas rods.

I was the “fishing pro” at Sport Mart maybe 20 years ago. Prices were manageable. Now are a bit outrageous. I’m looking to replace a few reels and am having trouble finding what I want at a decent price. Granted most of the reels I use some have called “antiques”, but they still work well for my fishing situations.

I'll bet some of you older guys like me have or did have an old Ambassador baitcaster. One that was usually red and came in a leather like case and damned if the case didn't include a plastic tube full of replacement parts.

Try several thousand on a trolling motor, or 2 grand on a fish finder, or maybe just a battery for 400 bucks. Nothing of any quality is cheap.

Pay to play. Some just play harder.

I think I'm fairly familiar with how prices have and/or are going. Back in the mid '80s, I bought a used Skeeter Bass boat Starfire (17 foot) from a guy that had been using it on the pro tour. It was prepped and ready to go with a 150 Merc on the back end and matching custom trailer. Think it was an 82 model.

I paid ($10,000) for that ride and sold it in early 90s for around $6500 as I recall.

Now I'm seeing a similar Skeeter setup advertised for around $70,000 plus.

A reel with a MSRP at an independent tackle store (Mom and Pop owned) of $229 has a margin of around $80.
IMO that is a bit rich as most of them don't carry the costs of inventory. Shop around!

I remember when being a millionaire meant something. Not anymore I promise. Prices for just about everything are not good.... fishing reel - 200- 250. fishing rod - 250 - 300, new bass boat 45k - 80k. Some guys pay 100s $ for fishing lures.lol.. but hey, I can’t knock anybody for paying for what they like to do....My 2cents

And i was going to ask about Shimano baitcasting reels....what is the difference between the curado 's and bantam reel models, besides the price?

From what I can gather, a good rod is more important than the reel, but that being said, you can still get an excellent St Croix or Loomis rod for $150-$170, and for bang for your buck, a Daiwa Fuego spincast reel for $100. $250-300 total not too shabby.
