So we know a guy that has a large property with several lakes on it, that have some big bluegill. I want to take my wife out in our raft to have some fun, and shred some gills. What is your guys go to when catching nice panfish? I have a couple inline spinners, a couple of small poppers, and of course some live bait, crickets/worms(even those these seem to attract/get stolen by the smaller ones.) Any suggestions on specific lures you guys like?

Float and fly rig with a trout worm on a size 8 hook. Tough for them to steal the plastic and with a well balanced balsa bobber the hits are easily detectable. Have done 100 gill in half a day with this rig.

What lb test line do you use with this set up?

4lb but I like to go heavier above the bobber to avoid line twist. Usually 10lb leader, 4lb below the bobber.

I'm new to a lot of this stuff. Is a float and fly rig a specific way to tie on things?

Fish at least one half the water depth for the large bluegills. You may need to locate your hook even deeper. Sometimes the barb gets in the way of a good hook set. Use the fluorocarbon line for the leader.

1/32nd or 1/16th oz jigs, 4 lb mono leaf worm or piece of crawler. Good for bluegill, sunfish, red ear, perch, rock bass, warmouth. I usually drop the jig to the bottom and just pick it up a bit off the bottom.

Trout magnet(gold) with the split tail that comes with it and add a waxworm. Suspend below a small bobber. Catches sunfish, bluegill, crappie, perch and many larger fish including trout and bass.

Gulp makes a night crawler in a jar and also a “pinched crawler” in a jar. They are much harder to pull off by the bait stealers and they work almost as well as real live crawlers.

Along with my other pan fish tackle, I always carried a two plain post cards (4×6) and a small box of size #10 and #12 gold, single-egg hooks. One post card was yellow and the other white.
If I ran out of bait or the fish weren't biting other lures, I would cut a very small, penant-shaped piece (about 1/4 inch wide on the blunt end and 1/2 to 1 inch long) off of a post card, poke the hook through the penant, and catch fish. Where you placed the hook on the penant determined the action it would have in the water. Place the hook along the blunt end or on the point for slightly different action. I would still fish using little or no weight. You can enhance the appeal with scents, but I rarely used them.
Was a very simple and cheap way to catch Bluegill and Crappie back in the day. I don't get to fish much these days, but certainly have a lot of fond memories.
