Okay we have had out lesson in cold weather. Would someone please close the North Door. DFW had -2 degrees this morning and another storm in coming in. The temperature in the morning is suppose to be around 17 degrees. We have not been this cold in this part of Texas in the past 73 years. My other house in unoccupied so I placed some electric heaters to keep the temperature up to prevent pipes from freezing but then we got into the rolling blackouts so don't know how cold the house got during the power off stages. Guess I will find out once we thaw out but I don't expect it to be good news. My home has not experienced any blackout yet but we are not out of the woods either. I do have a small generator that I can use to power the essential. There are three furnaces in my house but I can run one at a time and keep warm enough.

This weather reminds me of my military time in Germany where it got this cold quite often. A day or so ago we were colder than Fairbanks, Alaska and colder that my wife's home town in Germany

So Please shut the door.

Turn the water off at the unoccupied house and open all the spigets in the house to keep pipes from bursting

An unoccupied, unheated house should have the water shut off (at the street) and faucets opened at this time of year, regardless of where you live.
Mama Nature really doesn't care what you are "used to", even after 73 years or whatever.
Good luck folks !

Between the single digits and freezing rain reports (even in the northern part of my state !), I have never regretted moving to SOUTHWESTERN Oregon from K.C., 37 years ago.
We can drive less than an hour to play in 6 feet+ (Crater Lake, 65 miles away, has gotten THAT in the last 10 days !) of snow or go ice-fishing at a mountain lake, yet we, down in the valley, don't own snow shovels or snowblowers.... don't need 'em.
Drive 2 hours to the coast and enjoy 60°+ in February/March and again the same 60°-70° temps in August, when we are in the 90°+ weather.
I know....we are spoiled, sorry !

If you have an air compressor hook it up to the drain on the water heater and blow the hot water lines and water heater out that way. Then blow out the cold water lines. Only takes a few minutes. And as Gordon stated leave the spigots open when finished. I use the blow out device that I use on my camp trailer. Has a female hose connector and also an on/off valve and quick connect for the air line that really helps. You may have to open just a couple faucets at a time depending on size of compressor and pressure. Mine is 150 psi and we winterize the cabin in about 20 min including the hot water heater. Don’t forget any outside faucets as I forgot that one once - ‘just once’ 😂😂😂
