I’m considering buying a new surf reel and wanting opinions on not only a good brand to buy but what gear ratio the reel should have. Thanks.

Kinda depends on what you are replacing and why, what fish you target, what size line, how far you have to cast out, what pole you are using, and how deep are yer pockets.

Spinning or Bait caster? Spinning now I like at least a 5-1 for the new ones.
Some of the Bait casters are up to 6-1 that I know of.
Diawa even the old 4-1 reels are good. One of mine a 7700A is from 1978 and still works and does a good job for Salt Water. I use fresh water to remove the Salt water, Salt and have regreased it many many times. Have friends that use and love the older Penn spinning reels. So look at the name brands and pick the one you like the feel of on a rod.

Sorry, I did leave out a lot of details. I prefer a spinning reel versus a baitcast reel for surf fishing. I have a 10 1/2’ med to heavy cast rod that is rated up to a 40# test. I normally like to use a light weight fluorocarbon, shock leader and, then, a leader and a specific hook for what I’m fishing. The weight is between 4 to 6 ozs. Anything else I forgot let me know.

Hey audigger, most baitcasters now can be had in ratios up to 8:1, and if you really want to Burn a Buzzbait, the Revo Rocket by Abu Garcia is 10:1.

It's going to depend on how you will use it.. for bait fishing you don't need the higher speed reels. If you're throwing g metal you may want a higher ratio, like 5 to one or 7 to one . Poppers and swim baits you could run slower as well.
