Hi all,
I'm looking for a new reel to replace the one that locked up on me this week. It was a Shakespeare Ugly50BW spinning reel on a 7' "Uglystick Big Water" medium rod. I only fish saltwater, mostly looking for Reds, Drum, Trout and Sheepshead. To be honest.... I don't really know what to look for in a good reel.

Any suggestions for a good reel for under $100?

Thanks
Paul

A little over your price, Diawa BG 3500-$120, or Penn Spinfisher 3000-$140. Either would last the rest of your life with proper care. If your under $100 is cast in stone, both brands have quality, lower priced models.

I've always had good luck with Penn Battle ll. I have 8000 for trolling and 4000 for inshore lure casting. Check Amazon and Ebay for prices. Usually better than a store. Both can be had for under $100. With proper care they will last the average fisherman many years. Tight lines.

Hey Paul, I fish the New Jersey shore and have fished salt water my whole life. My go to reels are Penn. I have them in all sizes and have had many of them for a long time with a lot of fishing on all of them. Once a year, usually around now when it is off season I open them up for a cleaning, oil and lube. If you wash them down with fresh water after salt water fishing they may last a lifetime, so if you have to spend a few more dollars it will be worth it. Good Luck

Penn Pursuit 3 4000. 50 bucks or so. I have a 4000, 5000 and an 8000. I’m kind of a fan.

Thank you everyone. I appreciate your answers. I knew all you guys/gals would provide me some great recommendations.

1 last question.
On a scale of 1-10 (10 being best), where did my Shakespeare reel land?

Thanks.

If you consider that spinning reels vary from no name Chinese $29.95 to a Van Staal $860.99 , you can figure out the 1-10 location of your Shakespeare based on what it cost you. It's probably pretty low.

I just got the Quantum Reliance for under $ 100. I have used it a few times very smooth and heavy duty. I have had Quantum reels for years and never had a problem with them. I believe they are well worth the money.

The Diawa BGs are great - I have several. Find your size and wait for a sale or maybe a return on Amazon and you'll get to your price point.

I have a Diawa Feugo and Diawa BG. I like them both, but I like the Feugo a little better. You should be able to find a Feugo for around $100.
