Is it normal to start cleaning a fish while it's still alive?

I worked on a Party Fishing boat years ago as a Mate. I filleted hundreds of fish everyday. Many were still alive. If they were very fresh/active, I gave the fish a smack to the head with the handle of my knife/or mallet to calm them down. Fish dont have the same nervous system/brain as People or Mammals or even birds. I have seen fish caught with huge chunks of their bodies/tails/fins bitten off and healed over. If a person/mammal had 25% of their torso bitten off, I highly think they would survive. For a fish its not only possible but if vital organs are not damaged its likely. They dont feel pain as other creatures do. Have you ever seen a Fish Brain? Neither have I. They react to stimuli. I have filleted flounder and completely avoided the gut. A perfect fillet. I tossed the carcass into the sea to watch the fish swim away. I wouldnt worry whether a fish was alive or dead when preparing to clean it. Just smack it in the head.

I hit them in the head with a fast rap from a tack hammer. Cutting gills works fine too. On the catfish you have to hit the right spot and hit them hard.

OK, I hate to do this but its been years and I can't take the secret to my grave. Most people believe that bluefish is an oily heavy fish thats good for being put in the garden soil. Howevvvver, if when you catch the blue, you put your pole down, and fillet that fish right away and put it into a baggie and then place it on ice...........You will never throw that fish back. I've actually told people that it was stripped bass because I knew they wouldn't eat bluefish. They never knew the difference. Fish fillet into tinfoil with butter and onion. No skin, no bones. Best fish to eat.

I have had some of the best fish camping and cooking fillets on a Colman stove. When your eating the fillets and the carcass is still flopping around in the garbage can you know its fresh. Usually I have a 20oz hammer to calm their nerves with but when the fish are eating other fish (their MAIN food source) they are not thinking about how much it hurts being swallowed whole and dying while they are being dissolved in the digestive juices of a bigger fish! I have been reeling in a nice large mouth and had a Musky hit it, I have also had a big Pike hit a smaller Pike as I was reeling it in. They are FISH get over it!

When I fish for salmon I have a fish club in my boat and hit them in the head before they go in my ice cooler. In Alaska halibut fishing if they are over 70 lbs my charter captain would shoot them in the water after gaffing them. A big one in a 6 pack charter can be dangerous known to break people's legs flipping around. Just like they shoot gaters down south. And I am not going to alligator fishing. 🛶

Doesn’t anyone use ikijeme to dispatch a fish?
It only takes a few seconds then slit the gills and bleed them out in the water. How hard is that?

KATIM: I'm originally from LI NY and fished Bluefish all my life. We were Blessed with Great Bluefishing for decades. Some yrs the Blues were mostly small 1-5lbs. Other yrs we caught Blues up and into the 20 lb class. I actually lost a dock pool with my 21 lb Bluefish on on the last day as the Capt was blowing the whistle to pull up our lines! Lost out on $5000.00 to a 23 lb Bluefish. Oh well. Anyway, I have always loved eating Bluefish. Even the big ones. Bleed the big fish. Ice them immediately and cut out the Blood line and they are fine eating. As for the 1-5lb fish. Ice em, fillet em, cook em and enjoy. I had friends who would soak them in Milk over night to remove any blood. I tried it and didnt notice any positive difference in taste. Glad to hear there are other Bluefish lovers out there. Unfortunately Bluefishing back on LI NY is no where near what it once was. There is now a 3 fish limit. I remember Catching 15 or so Bluefish as an average day. Hopefully those days return. Oh one last thing. If you have never tried it you must Smoke a Whole Bluefish! Its unreal! My buddy used to do it for me. I personally dont do well smoking fish. But his were to die for.

Has your cat disappeared? Killing things like that - and laughing - is a real tell sign of a psychopath. Most don’t become Serial Killers but all Serial Killers started out torturing animals. Truly a disturbing posting.

No one wants to be cruel but you do what is best to make sure fish is best shape to eat. If not, it was just a waste of fish.
