Looking at designing a reel, any good sources to research the general design?
Looking at designing a reel for the shits and giggles, and maybe even get it created if it turns out alright, but I really need some sources for the general design and ways reels have been improved over time so I know things to avoid. Anyone know any books, sites or else that I could use?

If you're not an engineer I wouldn't bother.

I'm just bored af. Doesn't have to work, but I want to go into engineering in the future anyways so

Just draw a fantasy reel then. I always thought an infinitely adjustable drag would be a nice feature.

Yeah, I wish. I would just draw some but I've got a wandering mind and it bugs me to know they would never work. So normally I make stuff that could work. Takes longer and gives a challenge

Not sure why you’d need more range than free spinning to fish-can’t-run. Maybe instead a trigger or something that would allow you to temporarily increase or decrease the drag from its primary setting (I’m thinking in a spinning reel). Or drag adjustable via crank handle somehow. Or a clutch driven automatic drag. Or auto retrieve. Or a display that shows you your current rate of retrieve (not just a line counter that shows yards out, but a Speedo that shows something like 1 yard/sec). Or on-the-fly adjustable gear ratio. Or a handle that switches sides without unscrewing so I won’t have to murder my son who keeps switching my handle to the wrong side.
What about a reel that swaps from a 20 size ultralight to a 40 size with a different spool and maybe gears or something, kind of like my dad’s shotgun that switches from 12 ga to 20 ga with a barrel swap.

take a look at tackle Advisors over on yt. he takes apart expensive reels to look at the guts and workings. he knows his stuff. How about an integrated baitcaster/rod where instead of the traditional blank with eyelets, the line travels through the blank instead?

cheers. They are really weak on the rod. It puts pressure in the wrong way and breaks it. Plus if one breaks, you need a conplete new setup

yeah that would suck and it certainly isn't a recipe for success, the rod would be the weak point. Face it, there nothing new under the sun. I think the Pocket Fisherman was the last big new invention in the fishing world.

But do you have access to raw materials and a machine shop ? Gonna be a long haul without, at the very least, a Bridgeport mill, drill press, lathe etc. (Oh.. & some skills , maybe talent ?)
Good luck, ..however... you stated that you were bored.
Two solutions from me :
#1... take apart as many reels as you can, looking for the failure points and ways to upgrade components.
#2.... you're bored ??????.....go fishin', dude ! Duh ?!?

If u can show me your location, I can send you some old spinning reels and baitcasters that failed!...for U to look at why they failed n maybe start from there.....I noticed that the worm gears n other parts inside are the culprits to Reel failures....or R U looking for a futuristic reel design?.....Good Luck.
If you made a spin cast reel that wasn’t huge or heavy and worked all the time it would sell especially if under 100 bucks I haven’t used one in years but they are good for weightless presentations. Or a spinning reel/ rod combo that was balanced. I don’t think most people realize how unbalanced their spinning set up is. They are so nose heavy. So to speak. I don’t think a bait caster can be balanced though. The weight of reel is always going to want to follow gravity

Hi ew,
Check back issues to four days ago, "Can anyone tell me what this is"
Pictures showing an "integrated bait cast level wind rod and reel" It's a beauty but unidentified.
