The sixes river in Port Orford Or.

Hello, I am new to the site and have very little fishing experience when it comes to Oregon rivers. I have moved from Reno Nevada to Port Orford Or. where I basically worm fished at Boca, Stampede, Frenchmans and the truckee river. I would love some help as to how to fish and what gear to use on the sixes or Elk river here in Oregon. Cant wait to get my feet wet and hopefully catch some steelhead or salmon in one of these beautiful rivers. Any info would be gratefully appreciated.

Welcome to the Forum, guildman, it's a little early for the N.W. Boys to be up, but they are great people and will point you in the right direction.

Welcome guildman from a fellow Oregonian !
The Sixes and Elk are a couple of rivers I need to fish, so sorry, I have no specifics for you, but the present storm is going to blow out most everything this week.
If you have cable, locate the NBCSportsNW channel (426 if you have Charter/Spectrum). On Thursday and Friday nights @ 7pm(if no Blazers game) and Saturday and Sunday @ 8am, a show called Outdoor GPS is on. Great host and probably the best fishing/hunting hour-long interactive show you will ever find. Owin Hayes, the host, will be sharing tips and waterflows of various rivers and even has a call-in number so you can ask specific questions. Another resource is, of course, the ODFW Recreation Report (just Google it) and click on "fishing report", then a map will pop up and you can click on your area. Not always a fresh report, but they try hard, and there will be some useful info, regardless.
Obviously, a local tackle shop is your best bet. Ask for some advice and buy a few things and often the advice and help comes easier, certainly the next time you ask.
Good luck, should be some Steelhead available & moving out of the mouth, heading upriver and springer nookies are due in 6-8 weeks, so do your research and fiddle with your gear while we wait out this blast from Mother Nature.

Welcome. The Elk is mostly a drift boat game ever since the river changed. Used to be able to float the bottom section and take of at cape Blanco state park. I believe that you have to go into the ocean now. There is a little road side access, but much is private. There are definitely steelhead currently in the river and fishing has been okay using the normal tactics. Bobber/eggs, jigfly, or bead all work well. Some guys are running eggs with a bead trailer. If I were a smart man, I’d introduce myself to the Knapp family. They own the last mile of river on both the north and south. The Elk is one of the few rivers in the state that the landowners own the soil under the water. Locals are known for arguments with boaters who anchor. The Elk’s best season is for fall chinook. But gets the usual runs throughout the year. I’ve never fished the sixes, but believe it’s the same. You’re located in a great place, with many different options. I’m sure you’ll be posting pictures soon. Tight lines

I have fished the Sixes several times for fall Chinooks only. Fishing for them usually starts in November and ends at the end of December when salmon season ends. It is best fished after a good rain when it is on the drop.
I had a drift boat and success was best pulling Kwikfish wrapped with sardine strips. Also good is using a diver and bait, or a bobber and bait. Best bait is cured salmon eggs or sand shrimp or a combination of both.
Expect crowds it is a popular fishery,
