I get off on these things cooking by with about three feet of hull in the water, my wife was saying look at that jerk, he is going to go right by us, I was laughing and told her they have so little hull in the water they make a negligible wake like that.

I was fishing by myself years ago on Amador when one of them was coming right at me, went by me by maybe 50 feet, I was thinking I was going to go have a talk about courtesy at the launch ramp, when the wake got to me it was so negligible I figured what the heck, it was cool as all hell seeing a boat cook it up like that.

I get off on speed anyway, I had a guy offer to take me out on an ocean racer in the San Francisco bay when they have the big open class races while they were tuning up, a friend of mine knew the owner of Benihanna's restaurants. I had told him it was a dream of mine to see what 150mph felt like on one of those, he said let's go, I'll show you what 175 is all about if you are serious.

I still get a thrill out of thinking about that ride, he took me from the Sausalito yacht marina, outside the golden gate toward the Farallon Islands where the swells were right for opening that thing up. He looked at me and said we are at 125, are you okay, I said Fu%@ yeah... the sound and feel of that thing opening up from there gets me all charged up just thinking about it... one of my favorite experiences ever. My guess is we burned a grand or two in high octane racing fuel, the engines in that were like 2700hp each

I owed a Tracker with a 150 hp outboard on it. Fished Lake Berryssa for many years with my son and I taught him to have respect for others around you. When passing others who are fishing or relaxing in the water slow it down and pick up after you pass. Learn to enjoy the day together

You know that slowing down actually creates a bigger wake, right. When you're up on the step there's hardly any water displaced by the hull. When you slow down, and the hull sinks into the water,it plows water creating a much bigger wake. I see it every day when I'm out in my little 14ft aluminum boat. If you want to be courteous, just fly by as quickly as possible!

That's actually the point I was making, you slow down and it plows into the water and makes a way bigger wake. I am trying to convince my wife I need at least a 225hp, but she freaks when I'm going 35 in ours now, I tell her get used to it because my next boat will do at least 50

My current boat is named No Hurry for a reason. Its a 1968 4 cycle 55hp and doesn't go real fast. I have a 1973 Glaspar it is called the Dam Boat. It would go about 70 if you kept easing on and off the throttle between wide open and 3/4. It has a bronze speed prop on a Merc 400 Tower of Power. I should sell the Outboard. I used that boat as a fishing boat and removed the hot rod years ago.

woodguru...it was a thrill for sure, but if you would have caught a small swell or something in the water at that speed, there might be enough to put in a cup and be given to your surviving spouse.

Back in the '60s-'70s my copper-plated, scared dad would take me out on a 16' Mitchell boat powered by the popular 9 1/2hp Johnson to fish for trout. He must have been trying to bond with the son;it took too long to get to the spot and too long to return. Seemingly longer during the c-cold trips or when out of sandwiches and sodas. He started my appreciation for girls. Now, I'm copper-plated and very scared!

My little Tracker Panfish 16 has a 9.9 hp motor and only runs about 8 mph. Yeah, I know that sux. The lake I fish has a 10 hp limit on it. That little boat makes a bigger wake than the Ranger 364V / GT-150 I had years ago. The little motor just can't get the boat on plane.

You are responsible for your wake.

Wd4ity, if you already have the motor trimmed in all the way, try a small "Doel-Fin "type stabilizer. I've seen them do wonders bringing the bow down. That and put as much of your movable weight up front as possible. I've got my 14ft deep V running pretty flat even though I fish alone.

Yes, slowing down can create a larger wake, but speeding by can still throw quite a wake. How about some real courtesy. Slow down to no wake speed when passing a boat that is not underway.

The River Lakes I usually fish on have 100 boats or more on any given day. At that rate it would take 3 hours to get from one dam to the other. By the time you get there it's time to leave.
And that's not to mention the waterskiers, wakesurfers, and jetskis!
