Every time I spool a reel, I stretch it out. I have a swivel tied to boat trailer with 65lb braid. I tie the new line to it then walk off at least 50 yards with a tight drag, enough not to break new line. Works for all reels.
I like stretch as much of my line as I have room to before each trip. when I'm done fishing I also like to run my boat at a moderate speed and let my line off the spool behind the boat down to to spool with nothing on the line and pull it behind the boat for a few minutes. Then while still dragging the line rewind it onto the spool. That will take all the twist out of your line. Use, Reel Magic,
spray on your reel and line before and after each trip. Find and use a line with little as possible spool memory Trylene Xl comes to mind.

Mono is very old technology; it always gives me problems and is crap. We now have much better hi-tech line to use. As someone else suggested, get rid of the mono and it's problems forever. Spend the money once and buy some Power Pro -- you'll have it for years and you can concentrate on the fishing itself.

Many years ago I took a metal zebco to the keys. I think it was a 300 or something. Anyway fishing the edges of the quarry holes for key West airport!!! I caught more then my friends with the 100 buck reels.

Everything already said is very likely your problem. Just buy some middle grade 8 lb line. Reel it on slow and wet the line a bit. Always put some tension on it as you spool it. YouTube it. You need to know how to do this and fix it when you have to.

It sounds like to much line was spooled on the reel from the start and cheap line at that I bet. Go bye some good line and not those spools that you see on the store selfs that are exposed to the lite as light will make mono weak in time. Only bye the fishing line that you see packaged in the boxes that are not in the light. Take the spool out and turn the spool label up and feed the line through the guides and tie onto the spool fill the reel with line with tension on the line as you fill the reel spool and stop about 1/4 from the top of the spool it is that simple.

Fixorfish nailed it. The problem with some combos hat include line is they were spooled who knows long ago the the curl has set into the line from being on the spool so long. I replace my monofilament and fluorocarbon line at least once a year to prevent this. If you buy a pre-spooled combo, buy some line and replace what came with it.

I had the same problem with a shakespeare combo I bought at wally world. I finally walked the line on a football zig zagging the line back and forth. so was around 150'to 200' of line I think.reeled it back up and have had no problems with it since. Now if can just catch something besides grass it will all be worth it.
