What has been said here pretty well sums it up! Check it out or pay the consequences.

So I literally live on a state line so I often find myself fishing in both states even in the same day, do I really need to buy a license for both states? I know legally you need a separate license but do you think I would really get in trouble for fishing in the wrong state when I’m minutes away from being in the one I have a license for?

Sorry if this is a weird/confusing question or if this is the wrong place to ask

call your game and fish department in area they can tell u what is legal. Like Georgia and Alabama use eather one but Georgia and South Carolina you need a license from each state.

Not worth playing around with the man - DNR personnel, they don't mess around. They are thorough and don't expect them to cut you any slack if your in the wrong. Cover your six and be compliant with the regs. enjoy fishing

The lake I fished on the CT/Mass border, has 80%of the shoreline in Mass. They recognize our licenses, but the lake is governed by Mass regulations. So minimum sizes, bag limits, etc, are by Mass rules.

I also live near state lines of two states. Iowa and Minnesota. I always buy both licenses. It would not be worth getting caught fishing without a license. The ticket cost would be far greater than the license and the uncomfortable feeling of looking over my back would ruin the time fishing. I would rather feel comfortable and the money for the license goes back to what we love to do, enjoy the outdoors.

when you buy your state license you should get a handbook and it should explain all accesses , rivers ,lakes ect .and there is the internet . every place is different

Lucky your not between countries like USA and Canada then if your caught you need a wallet full of that funny looking money. Get both licenses if you want to fish both places. I didn't once and got caught by a GPS carrying
Canadian warden. Had to work a little overtime that week, what is worse I had beer in the boat. BIG BIG fine.
Make sure you carry a GPS so you know where you are as far as borders. JM2CW

🤔 I never really thought about that. I live in Connecticut and fish in the Long Island Sound. I’ve been fishing off a kayak for several years and just bought a boat this summer. Too far to paddle to reach NY water but since I got the boat I’ve been out to middle ground fishing and probably crossed into NY State waters. It never crossed my mind that I’d need a NY license. Does anybody know how that goes between NY and CT?

Can you legally buy a resident license for both states? If so that sounds like a bargain to me . Buy them both and no more worries.

Jim, the Saltwater licence is reciprocal with NY and RI. But remember that size and bag limits are not all identical. In their water, their rules, when you come home, our rules. It's a good idea to go online and copy down regs for whatever you're fishing for,and keep a copy on the boat. That way there's no surprises.Tight Lines!

Thanks Fred! The previous owner of the boat had all the regs in the boat. I’ll definitely get the new ones for 2021 to keep with me on the boat.

Hi Farmboy,
I live on the Texas OK border where we have some nice stripers. I can be in OK without even thinking about it. Texas and Oklahoma have a special license designation where for an extra $12.00 per year it works in both states. Fees for fishing licenses usually go to fish/hunting related causes....so I am OK(pun intended) with that.
So I would check with your Parks and Wildlife Dept. to see what your options are.
Good luck out there and be safe. We are getting hit real hard with the "C" virus in Texas...I am not going anywhere till we get vaccinated...probably have to wear a tag around my neck...

The bottom line in residency is where do you vote. That is your legal residence
