Yes you need two license, don't believe me just keep fishing with one license.
And lets not forget that the Fish and Game warden can also confiscate your fishing gear and impound your boot if your fishing in one.
Here in Texas you can fish boundary waters that join Louisiana with the license of either state. This consists of the Sabine River and includes Toledo Bend Reservoir which is the biggest man made lake in the south. However boundary waters adjoining Oklahoma are different, if you fish Lake Texoma then you can buy a license for the lake. If you only have a Texas license then you’d better know the location of the river channel or an Oklahoma warden will right you a ticket once you’re fishing the Oklahoma side. You could also buy a license for both states and be covered. Best to know the state regulations on boundary waters wherever you are at.
I have fished border water on the saint croix river between Minnesota and Wisconsin and never had a problem unless you launch your boat on the Wisconsin side. Lake of the woods and the rainy river between Minnesota and Ontario Canada is a very different story. We can not even cross the border now because of covid-19 . You can take your boat up the northwest angle inlet but it is 50 miles one way. Snowmobiles are also allowed if you trust the ice trail.🛶
The government should issue fishing licenses. Good for all states and oceans. Veterans should fish for free where they are. My CA license is almost free because I am disabled vet. Helps some.

Does that include rivers?
Depends on the agreement the two states in question make. I know for the Columbia river, you either need a Washington OR Oregon license, not both.

So I literally live on a state line so I often find myself fishing in both states even in the same day, do I really need to buy a license for both states?
The most logical thing to do is pick up the phone or get on line with the state agency where you live and present the question to them. If you know your local officer just ask him and he will give you the rules. It varies on where you reside. Good luck!

I know legally you need a separate license but do you think I would really get in trouble for fishing in the wrong state when I’m minutes away from being in the one I have a license for?
Sorry if this is a weird/confusing question or if this is the wrong place to ask

Here in Georgia we don't have to buy an Alabama (or any adjacent state) license if we're fishing in a lake that is split between the two states. You have to have a license in the state where you launched the boat. This is only good in lakes that are split by the State lines. If we go deeper into Alabama (or any other state) you must have a license for that state. This law applies only to lakes that are split by the State line of Georgia and another state. Call the State Game and Fish Commission of both states and ask them. After all, they'll be the ones writing you the ticket if you aren't legal.

My advice would be to obey the law.
Sound advice right there!
Just contact your state agency where you live by phone or on their web site and present the question to them. Most agencies are great to answer questions. Call your local game warden and ask. This varies from state to state.
Good luck.

My experience with this situation is for example the Potomac River and Chesapeake Bay both of which share a common state border between Virginia and Maryland. In fact the entrire Potomac River is in Maryland as the the border is on the highwater mark on the Virginia shoreline. As a Virginia Resident I am afforded reciprocity with while fishing in common share bodies of water provided I have the appropriate license for the fishing I am doing...e.g., for the Chesapeake Bay I would need a recreational saltwater license or a recreational boat saltwater fishing license that covers everyone on the boat. Additionally, there is a demarcation of the Potomac River at which you need a freshwater fishing license per Maryland Rules.
Long story short get with the respective states and their game regulations regarding your specific situation. One last observation...if your scenario is not regarding bodies of water that share a common state boundary then I would be really digging into the game regulation and laws...as others already mentioned you could be in for a very bad experience depending on the specific state(s).
Good luck and keep on keeping on!!

Check with either states wildlife services and ask if there is a reciprocal agreement between the states for that section of the stream. Most states also have license requirements of any stream or lake that differs from normal state wide laws in th pamplet that they issue each year. Walmart or any where you can buy licenses will have those. Most states if you are a mon resident caught fishing with out a license you are taken to a magistrate, to post bond, bail, or pay the fine before you are released. Be legal. Its not worth the fines and all other legal penalties that come with beinging caught, loss of fishing equipment, tackle, boat, vehicle, and loss of fishing privileges for several years. Buy your license, and Keep fishing .

I didn't read all the replies, so forgive me if I'm outa line. Research online the agreements GA & FL have in respect to Lake Seminole.
I to live on the state line. The Colorado River and Lake Mead separate Nevada from Arizona. My Nevada fishing license he’s good on the Colorado river, Lakemead. and Lake Mohave. Each of which separate the two states. You might check with your state licensing agency to see if your State Has reciprocity as well.
