Having a little debate here and need some consensus. What do you all qualify as a catch?

To set the stage, I had the nicest brown I’ve ever caught in the net while wading and it managed to release itself from the hook without my help. I was in a tight spot so was fumbling a bit and it flipped out” and swam off never to be seen again. My friend thinks it counts, I do not.

I’d always give you the benefit of the doubt in that matter and say that it counts. Did you ever have a solid grasp on the fish hand or Net?

I did have it in my hand very briefly but it flopped. I wouldn’t say I had positive control over it. It was brief but it was a fighter and jumped out.

It’s in the net... that’s a catch...

For sure. You probably don't feel like it because you didn't get to hold him - but in the net is definitely a catch

In some fishing tournaments a "leader touch" counts.

I call it early release. Still counts

Wrong. It's a 'professional' release

What is the argument that it’s not a catch. Some kind of “must touch” rule?

Catch. 100%.

Nice. Thanks. I think just that I didn’t have positive control of it. Probably being to hard but it was a giant.

For me, got to be your own fly, or a fly you traded your own fly for, hook has to be in the mouth and you got to touch the fish with you hand. Those are just my rules tho, kind of personal.

When you talk about it and say, "I caught a nice brown but it got away" then it was a catch. If you say "I almost caught a nice brown but it got away" then it's not a catch. From the fish's point of view, it doesn't matter if it got away or was released; it's free! Learn to think like a fish. Makes life simpler.
