Two reasons not to use goldfish!
1) You can get in a mess of trouble!
2) You can cause a mess of trouble!

I've used goldfish on trotlines in the past, they worked great for flathead catfish. the best bait I found for catfish was sunfish.

Unless they changed it in Oklahoma it was. Been years since I've put out a trotline. Got into bass fishing and can't use live bait there.

used to be crappie in the lake behind my house in fla before i moved there. was told that tilapia got into the lake and in a few years no more crappie. big bass all but disappeared; used to be lots of 10 pounders in it [nobody ate fish from there] always got released. not much in there now ; small bass, some chain pickeral, tilapia and of course lots of cats. and cottonmouths

In Texas you’ll find tilapia in a lot of power plant lakes and if you catch them you cannot release them back in the lake. Texas does not want them in the lakes

I saw that too. Never did care for tilapia. There's a reason why it's cheap.

Absolutely illegal NJ and pretty sure in most other states . And really expensive too. Don’t mess up your lakes , ponds . You’ll regret it in a few yrs. you should only use what’s native to your area or watershed. Keep your bait suppliers in business.
