In Va wardens can and do check equipment, registration, licenses posesion of fish. Anything that pertains to operating the boat, and game and fish regulations. They do write tickets. They also watch for impaired operators. Rarely is the coast guard in my home area. County and state police are very rarely seen on the lakes unless for accidents.
Keep fishing. DEEJAY

In California a state game warden has the authority to perform most any function needed from checking your sports license to checking boat safety and registration to writing you a speeding ticket on the street.

Better not have any beer in your boat in Canada or have a wallet full of that funny colored money.

Fishing story I used to live where the Detroit river dumped into Lake Erie. The best wall eye area was the channels between The US and Canada, they used to watch for us with their GPS's in their hand and you better have one
on your US boat also unless you had a real expensive Canadian License. (And no beer in your boat) Made good
sense to double check your GPS to make sure you didn't stray over the line. I miss that place.

My only bone to pick with California fishing licenses is that they are not pro-rated. You can buy one day fishing licenses for about a third of the cost of a full year's fishing license (for one day?). If you plan to do a lot of fishing in 2021, buy your license in January but if you have deep pockets, I guess it would not matter. I get checked by
Fish and Game about twice a year in California waters. In my case, I'm retired so I tend to squeeze those nickels until the buffalos shit.

That’s government in general captjim . Best I don’t get started on that.
Probably it’s better to do the research on what licenense and stamps are required it’s on us to know the rules . Just sayin’.
On another note, I sure would like to see veterans get a free pass everywhere on fees for licenses and beach driving passes .

I will second and third that one

Well I fish close to 150+/- days a year. So if I average that out I would be payin bout 21 cents a day for my license for the whole year. I can afford that.

Here's a logical old salt, I would bet that you did not fail too many math tests in school, that's what I'm talking about !!!
Now here's the other side of that coin, my old pal bought a year's fishing license in November full price when it expires in December. You see how us fishermen balance each other out. lol

There have been many attempts to change Cal fish and hunting licenses to a year from purchase rather than the calendar year system they now use. The biggest opponent to this has been fish and game. California fishing licenses are now sold on line or in person with a valid drivers license or state issued ID that is scanned as part of the purchase. But these are still only good for the calendar year they were purchased. There is a bill pending in the state assembly that would change the system to a year from purchase. What gets me is that F&G puts all these obstacles up to your getting a license, (scanned ID, only good for the calendar year) but then complain about dropping license sales. They even have an entire program at F&G to bolster license sales. Maybe they should take a look at their own procedures. But that will not happen under the current director.

I wish they would change it also but I think F&G is against it because licenses are color coded for the year they were brought in. So if you are in a boat or across the stream a game warden just has to see what color your licenses is to see if you are up to date. Only thing I could figure.

Ct does that with the expiration stickers on your boat registration. They don't have to read the number, just check the color.
