Is it true that some fish would eat very stinky and smelly baits?

Why bar soap though? Surely it tastes or even smell something they are unfamiliar with?

Idk man saw it on youtube but I'm willing to try anything that won't leave me smelling like a wet dog for 3-5 business days

I think they put treble hooks in a ice tray then melt soap and pour it into the tray

Not just Catfish, guys and gals. I have many scents from ProCure, mostly for trout, salmon and steelhead, & the majority are borderline rank smelling. The Sweet Shrimp isn't too awful, but Bloody Tuna is...as are most.
Fish can detect incredibly small amounts of "scent" and the trail you leave while trolling or the surrounding water around a "still bait" is the attraction, the "notice", if you will.
I have said before, the best Catfish Bait I ever used was made from cheese and blood...it doesn't get much stinkier. Even Powerbait for trout is pretty rank.
And of course, chum (illegal to use in freshwater, here in Oregon) is designed to be nasty smelling.
So yeah.....stinky works.

Do you want to eat a fish that eats rotten crap or good stuff? Fish can easily be attracted to scent but it doesn't mean gross stuff. I use fresh fish for crab bait because i will eat them. The bait could easily be in the steam pot too.

Personally, I would be extremely grateful to catch a fish that has a discerning palate. Maybe one that forages for garlic, onions, dill weed, lemons and just a smidge of salt and pepper..... just sayin'.

Any candidate species, Jeremy ?

I remember reading that catfish can smell many times better than a bird dog. So I have always used fresh bait for Channel Cats. Fresh peeled shrimp and fresh carp.

You don't need real stinky stuff to catch cats, fresh whole or cut up fish or fresh chicken livers work just fine and don't make your hands or clothes smell.

Me and my buddy will butterfly hotdogs and pour garlic powder over them set in sun on a hot day for the day. Pretty strong smell but not disgusting. Works good

Yes Sir Absolutely! Shad, garlic, crawdad, gamefish fish attractants many swear by, unless I forgot it, it stays saturated.
Now watch Rose and summer breeze attractants get HOT😁🎣

YEP, Bloodbait any fish can smell for miles as EASY DEAD DINNER.
ONE IMPORTANT FACT, at least I know for Trout, never let sunscreen anywhere near you or your gear.
I don’t know the science but it’s a no no amongst seasoned veterans.
