YOU NEVER put your fingers in a Northern Pike or Musky's mouth!!!!! You will be severely lacerated IMMEDIATELY! This also goes for Barracuda!

Get a fish grabber that you use in the mouth. I certainly would not put my hand in a fish that I did not know if it's got teeth or not.

Truth be told I like to hold them one small piece at a time with my index finger and thumb, not all fish but the ones I like to get to know better.

Under gill is one way especially toothy ones, but always try to support body to prevent damage to fish, unless keeping to eat it.

I don't grab anything saltwater by the mouth. Drum have grinders in their gills for deshelling crabs and other crustaceans. Use common sense and your sense of vision if not sure don't. Remember most fish have a way of defending themselves like sharp fins gill blades etc. Dogfish and toadfish lpoisonous to the touch and can hurt you bad. Be safe and ask Google.

Don’t grab a Walleye by the jaw. They have two sharp teeth in the middle of lower lip.

If you are catching and releasing the stress on the fish and possible mouth and Gill damage is far less if you hold by the mouth and support the body with the other hand. Particularly larger fish. It makes reintroduction easier and the fish isn't all stretched out in the gill and mouth area.
Or not.

As long as it ain’t got no sharp teeth hold it by the mouth and support the body I feel like this is the best grip

Freshwater fish; most bass, crappies, perch, - OK !
Small to med. trout - hold firmly but gently around body ! Larger trout - two fingers upright into rear of gills ! Muskie, pike, walleye, gar, - smaller ones around body, away from gill plates
(very sharp); larger fish - use lip gripper ! Not much experience with saltwater species, but if any species have rows of sharp teeth and/or are aggressive, keep hands/fingers away from fishes' mouth !
