How do you hook a fish?

What I usually do is just forcefully jerk the line at the angle of which the fish is biting, but that works about 30% of the time. Is there a proper or at least better way to hook a fish? And how can I tell when to hook the fish?

Beginner here: that's the only way I know of personally, I just yank the sucker back as soon as I feel it on the line. If you're not sure if you've hooked a fish or not, just stand still for a second. If it's not moving around, you've caught a stick, log or a weed. A fish will always move around.

There’s your problem, setting the hook on a gar to begin with. Generally wanna let gar just take it. However, if you do set the hook you HAVE to set it hard to penetrate their bony mouths

This is good for beginning, but definitely want to learn more about different hooks and what your catching, this definitely is not a one size fits all technique. I primarily fish circle hooks in the Atlantic. You set the hook with a Circle and you’ll lose a fish 10 times outta 10. This is the biggest hurdle even experienced fisherman have to get over when transitioning from freshwater to bigger fish.

My Brother-in-law was the worse with this trying to set hooks on Black Tips, Tarpons, Sheepshead, Redfish etc. muscle memory is a bitch to beat haha

It depends on what type or lure you're using for how long you wait to set the hook. If you're using a circle hook, you just reel it in hard once you feel a bite. If you're using something with a bobber, wait to set the hook until the bobber goes completely under the water or starts moving away from where it was sitting. If you're using an artificial worm or something on the bottom of the water column, give it a second after you feel a bite to set the hook to let them eat it. If you're using a crankbait or something similar with treble hooks, you can usually set the hook as soon as you feel a bite. There's tons of variables! If you have any other specific questions, just ask! Good luck!

I think they mean how do you physically move and move the rod in order to set a hook. How hard how far and what direction etc

I was just trying to answer the second part of OP's question by telling when I can usually tell to set the hook. But you are correct in that I didn't answer the first question really at all lol

What I do is slowly reel in if the line as I jerk the pole back, but don’t pull it too hard

Depends on the species you're targeting (Angling) and what tackle your using. I use live mullet for big Mulloway. When they hit you have to wait 5 Mississippi's to set the hook because they roll around and play with their prey to descale it before they swallow. It is so hard to watch your line drag burn out for 5 seconds before setting but you will lose it every time if you dont. Catching those mullet for bait would be bread and float with multiple hooks and a totally different way of Angling. Catching flathead would be bouncing soft plastics along the sand on the inside of a riverbend. Find out what species you want to fish for then see your tackle Shop and ask them what to use and how to use the different techniques available. Learning to angle instead of fish is the first step. Or just Chuck some bait on a hook and hope something bites it. That's fun too. Depends on far down the rabbit hole you wanna go. Good luck in the waters mate.

Depends on several factors: what lure, hook style, fish species, etc. Check out YouTube for what your fishing style, species, fresh or salt water. So many variables.

I had an aquaponics pond I kept bass, crappie and bluegill in. I would get creek minnows and feed them. The crappie would sneak up and suck the minnow in in one gulp and stay there. Hence set the hook quickly as soon as you see the bobber move down. The bass would come outa nowhere and suck it in, then take off. Hence wait until he takes off. After the bump and during the run. Cross his eyes.. Bluegill hit and pick and hit then run. Wait for the short run. Quick short set. Hope this helps.

I agree with everyone. You have to know what hook to use on what you are fishing for. Now I let the fish take the bait and let him run with it for about the to five seconds and then I set the hook. Go to YouTube and they have videos on how to set a hook and what hooks to use. Look up the Fluke Master on YouTube and he will show you everything you need to know about the problem you are having.
