Twenty years ago I was an avid fisher person. Then new job and move to Lompoc. Now I am retiring and want to get back to fishing. Can anyone help me out with catching catfish and trout on this nearby reservoir?

Im on there coast. But I use stink bait in a catfish tube with a treble hook. That's for channel cats and blues. Big blues you need to use small bream if it leagle there and that will catch flat heads also. Night fishing is more productive. Welcome and good luck.

I like that Jeremy. Do the nylons keep the livers on the hook better??

As someone already posted, in my experience growing up on Red River, live perch are the very best bait for big catfish. Whether you are using a rod and reel, or a trot line.fishing at night is also the best time because the big dudes seem to know they are safer feeding in the middle of the night. Just Sayin...RJS

I was taught to catfish by the Mortensen brothers in Utah at Utah Lake. They have both passed on, RIP. Leroy has had the state channel cat record since the sixties. But they always kept it simple, using just a number 2 bait hook and a red and white bobber set to the depth of the water. Leroy actually caught his record on a whole chicken leg, however in all the years I fished with them they only used a fresh peeled shrimp as bait. And usually fished in 4 feet or shallower water. I have see hundreds (maybe over a thousand) of catfish caught this way.

I have modified it slightly, using a #1 bait hook and I thread half a night crawler up onto the line first, then add the peeled shrimp. Or if I have a fresh carp, I would rather use that. Just a 1 1/2" piece of carp meat. and set the bobber to just bounce it off the bottom.
last year in three trips to Utah Lake I caught 64 cats ranging in size from 5 pounds to 8 pounds.
