I say it again if your going to fish actively then look & Daiwa BG series ! If your a casual fishermen and do not fish more then a few times a year , you can get away with most 50/ 60 $ reels easily !

Define “actively” I fish 7 days a week from May 1st through the end of September. Would that be “actively” fishing? During that time I fish, on average, 12 hours a day. BUT!!! I rarely fish from September through January and then fish once a week or so through ice for perch until the end of March. During my fishing season I’ll cast a quantum baitcaster, roughly, 100 times a day. I’m using the same two reels I bought over 5 years ago and they still work great. $34.00 each at Walmart. Never, seasonally, maintain them and just grease the worm gear for the spool about twice a week during the season with lubriplate grease. They never give up on me. I pitched my Daiwa reels a long time ago and have some Abu and Shimano, middle of the road, baitcasters I’ve had for years. None of which have ever given me any grief. Maybe I’m just not “actively” fishing. 🤷‍♂️

I did the same thing this year, replaced all my reels along with new rods and new setups (ul) for kayak fishing for panfish (crappie/bluegill/perch).

For reels I bought:
2 Pflueger president SP20's
2 Diawa Regal Lt 2000D's
3 Diawa RG 2500H-AB's

The small Pflueger sp20's are good reels and do extremely well on the ul rods I paired them with. The only drawback to them is their limited drag. I've lost a lot of bigger fish with them simply because the drag doesn't go high enough to muscle/slow the bigger fish down & they end up getting tangled in the anchor rope, weed beds or plain out snap the line.

The diawa regal's are a fantastic reel & the drag's on them are head and shoulders above the Pflueger's. I use 1 on a ul rod for the kayak and easily caught 500+ fish with it this year. Well worth the $$$, did a lot of casting with 1/64th oz jigs with them. Good distance, good accuracy and they have the ability to work the bigger fish. That's why my other regal 2000 is on a 8' dough rod for steelhead trout. Most of the trout I catch are in the +/- 4# range but I manage to land 3 or 4 +/- 9# steelhead every year. I've caught 28"+ catfish with the regal's this year, I see no reason they couldn't handle a 28"+ steelhead.

The 3 Diawa RG reels are nothing more than general purpose reels. 2 of them are on 9' catfish rods and the 3rd is on a largemouth/smallmouth setup. I picked all 3 of them up when they were on sale for $44.95 with free shipping. Well worth the $$$. I'm not easy on these setups and they've taken everything I've done to them/with them without a hitch.

I'm sure there's a lot of good choices out there. The diawa regal's were $60, the pflueger's were $50 & the diawa rg's were $45. I paired these reels with $40 to $60 rods except for the 4'8" pflueger combo That was a steal @ $70 shipped. I use it in a kayak as a dock shooter.

The best reel I’ve ever owned and still use it is an old Michell Rapid. It was seriously old when my Grand Dad gave it to me when I was 8. I’m 65 now and it still works like new. I don’t think you can even buy Mitchell reels any more. Not new anyway but if you could that would be all I’d buy. Those or Wright and McGill. They don’t make good stuff any more. Like everything else.

Just fished the surf this morning with UL rod and an old Mitchell Garcia 308. These old reels from the 60s are still bringing fish to shore.

That $800.00 Daiwa is too. Almost EVERYTHING fishing related is made in China now. That’s why we saw empty shelves at the beginning of this virus thing. Heck most Harley Davidson parts are made in China and Japan now🙄

I have i old ABU Garcia Cardinal reel. All the rest of my spinning reels are Quantum. Their customer service is great and more than once they've sent me replacement parts for free.

Piscifun! Very good reels at an excellent price.
Check out Tom Folley or Kansas Fishing Experience on YouTube to see how these reels handle big Walleye or wipers.
I think you will be very happy with any reel you purchase from them.

The last five years or so I have become a big fan of Okuma. I now have several of thier rods and reels. They are high quality and affordable.

I agree with the posts about Piscifun and Okuma Reels. All models are fairly priced. Good to excellent quality across the board. I also would add the same for Quantum, Cadence and Sougayilang Reels, which I have purchased many models of these within the last 3 years alone. Can't really go wrong for the price you pay for any of them. And of course Pflueger, Abu Garcia, Mitchell, Daiwa, Shimano and Zebco.. I fish almost every day (it's so good to be retired !) and never had any problems. Been fishing for more than 60 years and have a collection of over 100 serviceable rods and reels (at last count). I've never paid over $80 for any rod or reel.
There are some good rods and reels available for under $20 each. ALL will catch FISH ! Most would serve well for the occasional angler. If you're a Pro, you probably turn your nose up at most lower price tackle. Then again, if money is no object and within your budget, enjoy using the high-priced Loomis Rod and a Top-Shelf Reel. You really don't need that to enjoy fishing but perhaps you have earned the right to treat yourself to some expensive fishing gear. As a frequent member always says: "Just sayin."
