Unhooking treble hooks

What's going on guys, I'm new to bass fishing and I've been having a lot of luck with cranks and ratltraps. The only problem is, I don't know the best way to unhook the fish without getting the hook in my finger. Every time I put my thumb in the fishes mouth to hold it they give a big old kick and the hook gets in my thumb. Al the time. Any tips on not hooking myself ?

So should I still go for grabbing the fish by the mouth? Or should I grab them from the middle ?

When I am treble hook fishing, I will always have a set of lip grippers and pliers. I hold the fish with the grippers, then unhook with pliers. 95% of the time, I won't get spiked

Neat, I'll have to look into fish grippers. Just yanked a treble out of my thumb and I don't want to do that again

pliers are key

I got hooked real bad last summer while the fish was still on the other treble. He started thrashing around which drove the hook deeper..

I now wear a glove on one hand and use pliers to remove the treble hooks...

That's not happening again

If it's safe, giving the gill plates a squeeze is good, but you have to be firm. A net is nice if the option is available to you. iirc if you hold them upsidedown they are also more willing to stay still.

For goodness sake don't ever run the risk of getting the other hand snagged on a treble while trying to get the first one unhooked. You could end up handcuffed by a double treble plug and still have a flopping fish and you don't have third hand to manage the situation. Sounds crazy thinking about it but it can happen easier than one might think.

Not unhooking a fish, but had lure hung in trees across a stream and pulled hard on the line,
lure came back and slapped me on left side of neck and buried one of the trebles barb deep. Had to look in car sideview mirror,
using needle nose pliers to bring barb through and cut barb off and then back out the shank. NEVER WANT THAT TO HAPPEN AGAIN!!!!!

I remove the tail treble from the lure leaving just the belly hook. That leaves one less hook to deal with. I fish from a kayak and the fewer hooks getting thrown around the better. Me, fish , hook are in very close proximity. Normally the hook in the mouth of the fish is the belly hook anyway. In my experience the tail hook foul hooks the fish in the eye , Gill or somewhere else and hence is mostly useless,
