Grandpa wants to take the kid fishing

I'm a retired grandpa that wants to take a five year old fishing. Since this maybe his first fishing trip it is important that he catches fish early and often. I have a flat bottom boat with trolling motor and depth finder that can get on the water. Would appreciate suggestions as where to take the kid to get him "hooked" on fishing. I'll be based out of Stauton VA.

Thanks

Howdy from Texas. My best experiences like that for grands is to find a small private pond if at all possible. The fish usually line up to bite a hook with a worm on it. We just took the littles last Saturday and they had a blast catching small bass and bluegill perch.

Best luck to you!

I agree with Papa
Pond is way to go with little ones.
Even local park duck ponds can offer pretty good action
Be ready to have your hands full baiting hooks, helping casting, unhooking fish, untangling line , untangling line and untangling line.

Don't forget some KID snacks, jerky, chocolate, juice boxes.n chips. If the fishing a bomb he'll have fun picnicking with Gampa on the pond.

All good ideas. I would scout the chosen spot so you have an idea where the fish are. Don't count on fishing yourself and don't be surprised if he loses interest. my grandson was more interest in observing the wildlife than fishing after a while.

I agree with the ponds idea.
My advice is to take plenty of snacks/food and stay only as long as HE wants to and is havin fun.
If he's not havin fun, he won't want to go next time. Make it ALL about him.

Sarge, don't even bother with the boat, fish from shore on a city pond, a bobber, a short leader, small hook and small worms should do. When I took my grand 7 y.o kid the first time, I rented a 14' aluminum boat, I was more worried about my grandkid getting hurt or falling over off the boat than him catching anything. He also thought that it was just a a boat ride with extra accessories like poles and life vests. Try the shore first Sarge.

Iā€™m also a retired grandpa. I started my 4 grandkids with push button reels and artificial floating only lures. We catch a lot of bluegill and bass this way from the shore. We also catch a lot of bluegill with worms from our dock.

Hey Gene, look up Lake Monticello in Palmyra Va. about an hour south of you. Give them a call 434-589-1692 and see if they will let you in. Has bluegill, lm bass and catfish. Also a smaller fishing pond too.
