I've been a long time lurker on the sub and have enjoyed watching you guys reel in your first fish, your PBs and some straight up head scratchers. Now that its summer and the weather is finally nice in NE Ohio I figured now is as good of time as ever to pick up a pole. I havent gone fishing since I was a kid about 20 years ago and dont really know where to start as far as what type of equipment to buy, what to fish for, or good fishing spots and techniques. If anyone knows any good reference material for a beginner or has any tips let me know!

Check Facebook for local groups. Can't go wrong with buying an ugly stik spinner combo, some hooks, and some worms. Welcome to the sport

Ugly stick is a rod brand. Spinner is the type of reel the combo comes with.

Go on Amazon and search "ugly stik spinning combo"... Then go to your local sport shop and buy it there

You have received some good advice on equipment. As for the rest of your needs, contact the local governmental department (here in Wyoming it is called Game and Fish Dept.) that manages wildlife in your state. Ask your questions there! They are the best resource for the information you seek.

Man you are starting back up at the right age. I only fished occasionally the last five yrs or so , but got back into it a few months ago, and loving it just like I used to. sometimes a hiatus is good. Like others said get a 50$ or so spinning outfit and your set to go. The easiest artificial to fish , to me, is a trick worm on a wacky rig. google it and you can find all about it. Fish it and in a few times you will get a bit of the "feel".. super luck to you. post your results. Steve

As you may have surmised, fishing is HIGHLY addictive. There is no antidote for it that I am aware of and many a marriage has been disrupted by it. As in most addictions it will be VERY expensive. If you have a dog, and you take him with you, they are some of the best fishing buddies there are. If you have Grandkids around the age of 8 or nine, now is the time to get them addicted as well, however, know that they can escape the addiction when peer pressure, video games, cute boys and girls interfere with their fishing endeavors. I managed my addiction for many many years by getting addicted to Golf. It is more powerful and has a greater kick then fishing until you get old and cannot swing a club anymore. Now I am back to fishing. Plunked down 32grand for my dream pontoon boat and have been spending my time lurking for bargains in some of the larger bricks and mortar stores locally. Then I found out how to order on the Internet from Asia. So tempting............ , but I digress, As a true fishingstage.com observer, I get my 'fix' reading these posts, watching the videos and learning new stuff. My advice? (well, you DID ask for it) take up bowling. Least expensive of all of the ways to get your 'fix'. But I suspect nothing is going to deter you as it appears you have caught the bug and nothing I can say to you is gonna change your mind. Welcome to the club then. I'll see ya in group.......

Go to U_Tube and start typing in the type of fishing you want to get in to first. You can get a lot of info on equipment, baits and how to use them. Fishing can get expensive so decide how much you want to/can spend per month and try to stick to that amount.
