I’m damn close to throwing in the towel. Was super excited about trout this fall. Stream was stocked that I started fishing this year (my first year fly fishing) and I can’t catch a thing. I caught everything you can catch in va all summer(except trout) had a blast and now I’m watching dudes with power bait kill it and I can’t do a damn thing. I can still find trout on the creek, but they don’t want a thing to do with most of what I’m casting. I did miss a set with a woolie bugger which about drove me to dive in after the trout. Thoughts? I’ve tried every fly I can think of dropper rigs, grasshoppers, egg pattern to mimic feed pellets/powerbait, elk hair caddis. Trout are hanging in deeper pools, I’m not really seeing them rising for anything. Very tempted to just go get the old spinning rod out.

Mr jerrell. These guys catching fish on power bait, are they using fly rods to present the bait or spinning gear? I don't fly fish but I use power bait on trout. I use spinning gear & must be careful not to throw the bait off the hook. I've watched pilgrims flyfish & they always seemed to use flies, eggs & other fly fisherman whatever. I admire a man with the patience to fish with a flyrod but it looks like that sudden stop on the backhand would be tough on bait. Good luck. I'm sure you'll figure it out & laugh about it 30 years from now.

Might try a weighted Muddler Minnow to entice those deep run trout

When in doubt, throw a woolybugger. Even if it catches nothing, it has such a great name!

I like San Juan Worm patterns in 12,14,or 16 weighted, for late season stocked rainbows in TN. Also, I use a Tellico Nymph in 12 and 14 on 2x or 3x nymph hooks that i lead wrap a bit under the body. But I chuckle that the bright yellow bodies resemble whole kernel corn as they bounce across the bottom. I like to swim them deep, right close on the bottom, and i try to let them sit still momentarily and then move the fly just a bit until linedrag starts the swim action. Mostly, thats when the hit happens; just on the brief moment of rise.just because they might be stocked, doesnt mean they are totally dumbed down. They still do some fish things. Wish you good fishing. Be careful of strange scents on your flies, ex: gasoline, cigar, etc.

Sculpzilla with a stinger. Tied as small as #10. Fish on a swing, jig it thru a deep hole, or rip it across the skinny by rifles.
That fails-garden hackle.

I caught 1 3lb bass in 7 hours of fishing last week! I got skunked twice last winter! I consider myself a pretty good bass fisherman but still, after 40 years of fishing in general, still get skunked on occasion. It’s part of the game. I can guarantee you, that you won’t catch fish if you quite... So, read more, watch more videos on YouTube, study all things fly fishing, all things trout, and NEVER give up!🏄🏼‍♂️🎣

First casting has a lot to do with catching or not catching. How the dry fly lands on the water.
2. Look around if there is a lot of green grass etc use something green, brown use brown.
If the trout are deeper try a prince nymph or some type of nymph.
I’ve been fly fishing for 50 years and some days stand next to someone that’s using the same thing and I catch 10 to 1.
Practice and patience is what fly fishing is all about.
Always always always visit the local fly shop and get some honest info of what’s going on in the area.

Good luck but have fun first
