Minnows from the bait shop dying

I went crappie fishing last weekend with live fathead minnows but I didn't finish them all. I ended up bringing them home to keep as pets and set up a 10 gallon tank (uncycled) with a sponge filter but they're now dying off.

I thought these minnows were known to be very hardy and tolerant of poor water conditions so I'm not exactly sure why they're dying. My water quality is fine after testing so now I'm assuming they weren't very healthy to begin with. Or maybe they got too shaken up when I drove home?

Any thoughts? If they're still alive by next weekend I might as well use them for bait again.

Did you fill the tank with tap water?

Yes but it was dechlorinated. My tap water isn't contaminated with anything and I never had issues with fish in the past

OK, then that isn't it. Could possibly have been temperature shock. Just throwing some stuff out there...

Basics of aqurium keeping still apply. Dechlorination of the water is necessary and the nitrogen cycle still has to be established.

The water is dechlorinated, I was doing a fish-in cycle but the test kit was hardly picking up any ammonia since I didn't feed them a lot

stress kills fish too. thats why many people catch crap for mishandling a fish and boast about how it "swam off fine" as you can see, your fish couldn't even survive a trip to the pond and back. Im sure a few will make it

Did you cool the water down, most bait shops have colder water, when you're fishing no doubt it heats up a bit, throw in a bit of ice.

Given a single guess, i vote for extreme stress as the cause. Just Sayin...RJS

I have kept minnows in an aquarium and fed them gold fish food. Never clean the vessel you have them in with soap, detergent, or bleach. I found out long ago that know how much you rinse you will still kill them.
