Can someone please help identify this fish for me?
Pls tell me what kind of fish this is, it looks really nice, caught it earlier in the local pond, BTW when I was returning it, it moved really slow at first, it wasn't hooked in the gill at all, but it'll still live right? the pond probably goes 10-12 feet deep max.

Fishbrain’s fish recognition says black drum. It’s not always totally accurate though

What about if it'll live? when I let it back in it stood still for a second or 2 then moved slowly.

Fishbrain is wrong more often than it's right lol

I’ve never seen anyone give a correct answer after “fishbrain says”

This is 100% a tilapia. They are an invasive species in the south and it's illegal to release them in many places, make sure to check your local regulations.

I never released them, but I never caught a fish like this one before in this pond, and ive been here a while, I also noticed a few days ago their were hundreds of baby catfish, is it possible the people who run the golf course/lakes put it in there with the catfish? Just a wild guess I wouldn’t know... after I put it back in though it moved really slow, taking a guess do you think itll live? It was still able to swim away, just slowly after pausing for a second.

From a couple minutes of research it does appear they are a prohibited species in Texas meaning they cannot be transported or released alive into any public waters. They are an invasive species and damaging to local/native ecosystems. If you catch more you can kill and eat them or just let them die on land.

Thanks for the info! Last question, you probably dont know anything about this, but I remember years ago some golfers had told me chemicals are put in the pond, I dont know if this was a lie so we don’t take any home or what, and don’t remember why or what chemicals, but do you think I can still eat them? Surely if these “chemicals” don’t kill the fish they’ll be safe to eat?

Btw this was a little bit west of houston, is that what you consider “south”?

Also by the mouth comparison and given in Texas, where I live this is definitely a drum not a damn tilapia. You’re garbage Arturo.

Help me out here? Pond fresh or salt? Black drum fresh or salt?
Got to agree its a black drum by my comparison here in NC. As far as will it live if it swam away and didn't surface belly up you did fine. Some fish need a moment to get over the catch.
