What is the difference between fresh water and salt water catfish? Why is one good for eating and the other not?

Appreciate your answers.

Don't know where your hearing one catfish is good and the other not but it is WRONG! Salt water cat as good to eat as frsh water. Speaking of good a sail cat maybe the best eaten cat you can catch. The meat of a sail cat even the largest ones are always white and firm were as all and I mean all other cats the meat is yellow or shade of yellow. All my life and I'm 76 years young I've eaten catfish. You can go to Cracker Barrel and have cat fish dinner. It's farm raised and I believe the flathead salt water catfish I catch is every bit as good as theirs and the gaftopsail catfish are even better. I'm particularly partial to smoked catfish and have been smoking them for more years than I care to count. If you want to try some of my smoked cat pm me.

Thanks for the info. Was really confused about this. All my life down here in RGV I've been told to throw the salt water catfish back.

By the way, I'm talking about the South Padre Island area of Texas.

Throw the hard heads back. Not worth cleaning but the gaftopsail is worth keeping and good eating...

It may depend on the salt water catch location. I've had saltwater cat and 2 bites and that was it. Fresh water cat is for me.

Come on and bass don't get worms! I worked on a grouper boat and just gutting them to sell them we would dig out the ones we saw. I don't remember ever seeing worms in the cats I catch.

I've caught saltwater cats around 10lb and just cut them off, once I netted one and couldn't clean the net from all the slime on it.

For my 2 cents worth, the only salt water catfish I've ever found worth eating are gaff top, or sail top cats. The others, throw back. Ordinarily, fresh water cats are both better and easier to catch. Gaff tops are rare and are a slimey mess. Just Sayin...RJS

I don't know what you've been sharing with me other than you've said it's catfish. Whether salt or fresh I'll attest to the fact that it tastes damn good to me. I haven't sent any back yet have I?

They are flathead saltwater catfish. But the batch that's coming has 1 fillet that's a sailcat.
