I put in a (new to me) used outdrive
Volva Penta aq280. Parts house sold me synthetic gear oil and told me to fill it from the bottom until the oil came out of the top hole. Bottom line...no forward or reverse. Further review shows that synthetic is for dual props only
I should have used same oil as the engine. 30wt. And only used 2.7 literes. How much damage have I done and will just draining and putting correct oil in fix my problem? I even have oil in my engine compartment. 1978 Bayliner Victoria. 5.7 engine

Should I flush it first and if so, how?

I’ve flushed engines with kerosene. Run for a short period at low rpm’s. Clean it right up! Drain warmed oil first, of course. Good luck!

Not personally familiar with a Volva Penta, but no forward/ reverse generally means a linkage problem. Good luck!

He’s probably nailed your problem. It’s not a matter of oil, it’s a mechanical issue. How much do you know about this used outdrive?

Agreed. Not an issue with the oil. It’s a mechanical problem.

Again, not familiar with the Penta drive, but makes sense that if it’s removal like the shaft on an outboard, the linkage must separate at some point, and be re-attached when new out drive installed. Hopefully easy fix!

Think positive. It’s fixable, but at what cost. If you can do it, maybe after watching some You Tube videos, you’ll feel like an engine mechanic! Keep us posted.

Synthetic vs regular oil is certainly not causing your problem! I agree, you have a linkage issue.
